Today a very dark cloud has come over my heart..Walter A Nolan was one of the most beautiful memories that I have treasured over the past 65 plus years..Walter was my first teen age crush..I met him at his “farewell” party when my older brother and the other members of their “crowd” arranged this party when Walter was going into the US Navy..I was only 14 years old and was really not an invited guest to this party (I was Ralph’s little sister). It happened to be held in my Mother’s and Fathers’ home, thus my being there. I was sitting at the kitchen table while all the music and dancing was going on in the living room ..The “older teenagers” were all having a great time. Walter came into the kitchen and asked me my name and who I was. He was so kind and took time to speak to this kid, who at 14 looked 12..He visited with me asking me about school, friends and other small talk stuff. It was for the following four years that I became Walter’s Pen Pal. My first “date” was when his sister Helen got married and he invited me as his guest. That was probably a year after we met. After his discharge from the Navy we both went in different directions..He went on to Iona University and I went on to Baruch..We eventually met and married our future spouses and lost contact. It further saddened me to read that Walter and Judy lost their Son David and that his younger brother Artie is in Heaven with his parents, siblings and nephew..We knew Artie from our days in Jackson Heights and Woodside. I pray that the Good Lord continues to comfort the Nolan Family and that their love and memories carry them through..RIP my dear friend..and God Bless you in Heaven..Please say “Hello” to my Frank and Ralph for me.

I am truly saddened to hear of Walter’s illness and his passing. Walter and I worked together for many years. Walter was always there to offer advice and counseling and he ran an underwriting shop to be proud of. Walter let his concern for all he knew and loved be known. My sincere condolences to Barbara and the Nolan family. Walter, you will certainly be missed by all. Rest in peace.

Walter exemplified the TIAA-CREF mission of providing the best possible service to all participants. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have known him. I’m afraid TIAA’s tremendous growth has resulted in a confusing organizational set up that often makes personal contact very frustrating and difficult.

Walter was his own man. He always challenged me at Ron McPhee’s weekly staff meetings when I was a rookie product manager. He kept me on my toes. Since I was always first on the agenda I would talk while the gang ate those great lunch spreads Ron was famous for. He was a good man and his family should be proud of him.
