One of my favorite memories of my brother-in-law, Roger, is of him sitting on my couch here in Columbus, Ohio, some twenty years ago, coloring with my two young daughters. My husband, Matt, counted Roger as a friend, and when we visited Florida, the two of them would enjoy going out in the morning for bagels and coffee, and maybe a game of golf. While Roger’s heart belonged wholly to the Cleveland Indians, (Go Tribe!), he made room for Matt’s favorite team, the Ohio State Buckeyes, (Go Bucks!). My family was often treated to the “Roger tour” when we visited, in hopes that we could finally see the dolphins he always assured us were there. I always enjoyed Roger’s sense of humor and extensive vocabulary, and marveled that he made friends wherever he went. It didn’t matter if someone was homeless or an executive, he was the same engaging, helpful, interested person to all. Roger had the rare gift of loving his job and spent his life sharing his passion for service-learning with others. This will continue to have far reaching and long lasting effects. I’ll always be thankful that Roger deeply loved and was proud of my sister, Sally, and my niece, Alexis. We’re richer for having known him and will miss him deeply.
