To the Billy McCune’s extended family, my most sincere condolenses! I had known Bill since middle 70s. We worked, played softball and golfed together for many years while assigned to AFTAC both in Florida and Germany. Bill and I made a trip from Germany to the Ole Course, St Andrews, Scotland in the early 80s–it pour rain on us but we still played the Ole Course!
Always had great appreciation for Bill and considered him one of my closest friends. Since Bonnie and I live in Alabama now, is was not easy to get together, but not long ago, Bill reached out to us, we were able to meet him for breakfast in Suntree in the recent past–we had a great time catching up.
I am sorry that he has pasted. He was a fine gentleman!

Thanks Frank….not sure as to why the obit section does not work. Appreciate you sending. Bill and I were stationed together at Shemya….and at the 1155th great guy and what a total surprise. Ruth and I are just fine! I am under doctors care since they found that I have memory loss (dimentia)….as to why, that is one of an old AFTAC disease called “can’t remember shit”. You folks take care!

Anyone who was lucky enough to shake my Dad’s hand knew they had just made a new friend or they are saying hello to an old friend. Like Gail always said, “Bill never met a stranger.” That is one of many great attributes I admired about my Dad. I also deeply admired the love my Dad has for Gail. Growing up, I wanted that kind of love in my life too and waiting patiently, got pretty lucky when Joe showed up. Dad and Gail sure did make over 33yrs together look easy.
My heart never felt fuller than when I saw my Dad meet each of my boys, Ian and Nathan. These kiddos got to see Dad as I remember as a kid. This towering 6’4” grandpa, with bad knees, got down on the floor and played matchbox cars; had Nerf gun fights, played jokes, and shot hoops. My boys will have those experiences for their lifetime. Every day, in each of them, I see a little of Grandpa. That makes me smile through this heartache. Ian and Nathan will always be reminded of the great man Grandpa Bill, my Dad, was.
Even though we knew his heart was working hard, we never expected him to go so quickly. Truly, I am grateful he did not suffer but sad I never got to say goodbye. If I had a chance I would tell him that I will miss him more than he could ever know. It is incredibly hard to imagine life without him. Dad is no longer just a phone call away, but he will never be lost in my memory and will live in my heart forever and ever and ever. I am so very proud to be my Dad’s daughter.

Gail – I was really shocked to hear of Bill’s passing. I met him years ago when we were both on active duty while assigned to AFTAC. We were both avid softball enthusiasts, Bill being a player and me a coach. I will always remember “Shamu” initiating the double play that ended the championship game against the Patrick Hospital. That outstanding play made us (the AFTAC White Team) the 1977 Patrick AFB Slow-pitch Champions. A great player and, an even greater man! Please accept my sincere condolences.

Dad, I will always love you forever! It was not supposed to happen like this! I can’t stand the thought of never hearing your voice again but I know you will always be with us. You chose my path that followed your foot steps by joining the best military department, United States Air Force (Aim High). I had dreams of outranking you at Retirement but you were the best as can be & in all reality you made Chief but 3 more years at Loring AFB was not worth the sacrifice of pinning it on, but I will/have in my eyes you were well deserving to be known as a Chief Master Sergant of the USAF. You taught me so much especially with Softball. The game I have always loved playing as well as you. I loved watching your games as a kid and to see you slide on your belly and receiving the nickname “Shamu”. I will always have great memories with you as my coach as a kid until I joined the military & continued to play co-ed until my knee could no longer take it. I could continue on and on and on talking about you how great, caring, loveable person you are as friend, dad, family, grandfather but I am sure everybody that has ever met you already knows this. You will Forever be in my heart love always your daughter Kathy
