Dear Steven and family,
Our hearts are broken for your loss. When I started teaching at MIHS, Jim was often the bright spot of my day. His brilliant sense of humor and passion for his crafts and life inspired so many. He adored his family, and often shared that with me. We have so many fond memories of Jim. He was a wonderful man, and this world is a better place because of his loving ways.
Blessings and Love,
Mark and Julie Johnson

I took French I from Mr. Brush as a senior at MIHS, after having taking French I and II at Edgewood Junior High School. I wanted a cruise class to offset all the AP level classes I was taking, and little did I expect it, but he figured that out, and still knew what kind of class I needed more than I did. Mr. Brush was funny, kind, smart, and treated me more like an equal than a student – being able to come to his class and be with a teacher who cared so much, but who made things so fun, was exactly what I needed during a pretty high stress senior year. Maybe the slang he taught me isn’t so PC, but since I learned this from him in the early 80’s, I’m still going to quote him… “elle a du monde au balcone!” Rest in peace, Monsieur.

Forty years ago I was a miserable student in his French class. Yet I think of him so often. He was an inspired teacher and a gentle soul who left his students with a lifetime of happy memories. May he Rest In Peace and may his love ones find comfort in their happy memories!

Mr. Brush was one of my favorite teachers at Merritt Island High. I loved his passion for life and he made learning “fun”. It was quite obvious that he genuinely cared for his students. My condolences to his husband and family. Thank you for making a difference! Vicki Davis, Class of 1973

Jim was one of those teachers that made you feel like you were number one in his book. If I was having a bad day in school I would walk by his room for him to spot me and tell me how beautiful I was. Thank you Jim for making a 17 year feel special and making her day marvelous.♥️

High school years were difficult for me. Mr Brush was a light in a dark place. I loved his classes and learning French with him. Moving to Canada I frequently have used my French words to assist guests at the cottage rentals where I work. Thoughts of you still bring a smile Mr Brush. My condolences to his husband and family. Your former student (1978-79), Lorraine Nilsson.

Monsieur Brush was, and still is, one of the great influences of my life choices as a Musician and Educator. He was a constant source of honesty, humor, and nurturing. Who knew we would be speaking French, laughing and learning in a matter of days? Mr. James Brush knew. He showed such care for people. Thank you Sir, for setting such a positive, loving example of how to live. We kept in touch, with a quick email, or post on social media. Treasure of a soul.
I also, tell many Mr. Brush stories over these 28 years of Educating. Thank you, Mr. Brush. Thank you.
Elise, (Lisa Honeycutt)

So saddened by the loss of a great teacher, fabulous musician, and wonderful artist !Jim will be sorely missed, but his keen sense of humor ( especially at long faculty meetings) or his popping into my classroom with a funny limerick will remain. For your family, please accept my deepest condolences.

So sorry to hear the news of Mr. Brush’s passing. He was my French teacher at MIHS in my sophomore year. He remains one of my all time favorite teachers. What a fantastic teacher. He inspired me to pursue French through high school and college and when I went to Paris for the first time I was able to find my way around without much help because he had insisted for class that we learn the map of downtown Paris. I remembered even after all the years that passed since high school. Then and every time I visited France after I always thought about Mr. Brush and the French class I took with him in high school. I have told my kids stories of class with Mr. Brush. He was a fantastic teacher and a kind, good person. The world is greater for his having been here, but the world is lesser without him.

My condolences to Mr Brush’s family. He was such an amazing human and the best teacher ever. His sense of humor and love for kids will not be forgotten. I always wanted to let him know that when I became a teacher I told all my students about him and stole a bunch of his jokes ❤️
