I had the privilege of going to lunch with Floyd and my father Thurston on several occasions during the summer of 2014. My father had told me a little bit about his history as a gunner in the flying fortress B-52’s during World War II and I had the occasion to talk to Floyd about it during these lunches. It was not the only topic we talked about of course, but being a history buff, especially concerning America’s wars, I listened with keen interest as Floyd calmly told me about his adventures. I believe the total count of missions he flew in was 27 if I remember correctly. You see, I remember thinking that this kind, gentle man, now obviously, slowed by age, helped change the course of history for untold millions of people, both during the war and up to this present day. Those lunches at Arby’s were priceless, as in an age where sports stars and reality show narcissists are somehow propped up and revered as idols, I was sitting with a genuine American hero. That is not what he would ever call himself, but for what he and his fellow soldiers accomplished, I will certainly call him that! He also spoke if his love of baseball. He really loved his family and told me he was a blessed man. He was indeed. Floyd, thank you sir! It WAS my honor to know you! Philip M. McLeran
