Obituary of Charles Cox

Husband, Father, and all around great guy, Charlie Cox, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 27th 2018.  The world stopped for just a moment when this happened. Charlie was known for his good nature and comedic approach to both fun and stressful situations.  He loved to joke, tease, and had a knack that allowed him to make light of even the most exasperating situations. He loved his family, the military, cooking, bowling, hunting, fishing catching, competitive shooting, and golf.  Although the latter varied from week to week based on his last round. Charlie grew up in Glenville, West Virginia, the son of Lawrence Vere Cox and Mary Katherine Jones (Wix) who preceded him in death along with his stepfather Robert W. Wix and stepbrother, Daniel Wix.  Charlie later moved to Parkersburg, WV where he married his wife of nearly 49 years, Becky Cox (Bayer), who he adored and thought the world of.  Charlie and Becky, who subsequently retired to Palm Bay, Florida, have two children, Brian Cox (Kim) and Brie Shamblen (Mike) who live near them in the local Space Coast Florida area.  They have five youth-filled grandchildren: Cameron Cox, Collin Cox, Gage Shamblen, Kaylee Cox, and Syan Shamblen.  Charlie is also survived by a brother, Larry Cox (Kim) of Washington, WV and siblings by marriage, Cheri Hill (David) of Parkersburg, WV, Craig Wix (Bonnie) of Parkersburg, WV, and Eric Wix of Charleston, SC.  Charlie is also survived by, his “adopted brother” (brother-in-law) Buzz Bayer (Jackie) of Parkersburg, WV/Palm Bay, FL.  Charlie has one nephew Justin Cox and three nieces Kayla McCoy (Cox), Jenna Bayer, and Kelsie Starrett (Bayer). Charlie was a Vietnam Veteran finishing out his military career by retiring as a First Sergeant in the US Army National Guard in Parkersburg, WV.  He also had a successful career in the natural gas industry.  He retired after 30 years of service from Dominion Energy (Hope Gas) where he started his career as a ditch digger in Parkersburg with several successive promotions and transfers around West Virginia including Madison, and Buckhannon.  When Charlie retired, he was the City Plant Manager of Clarksburg, WV. Charlie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Buckhannon, WV where he enjoyed cooking and preparing meals as a team for their Free Will dinners. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 between 3:00 and 4:00 PM with services to immediately follow.  Visitation and services will be held at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care located at: 950 Malabar Road, SE, Palm Bay, Florida.  A celebration of life will be scheduled for a later date along with the placement of the final remains at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL.
