Obituary of Florence Christine Donovan

Florence Donovan, born Florence Christine Anderson to Hugo Emanual Anderson and Annie Albertina (maiden name Peterson) in Arlington, NJ on February 19. 1922, transitioned to heaven on May 2, 2022 at the grand old age of 102! She is survived by two of her three sons, Vicki Simpkins who is like a daughter, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, and a large extended family.

Flo graduated high school 1939 as valedictorian and worked as an overhead crane operator in support of WWII. She loved dancing and speaking Swedish at Vasa Park in NJ. She married Pere Lethbury Wickes IV on Sept 7, 1941 and worked on poultry farms in NJ and PA.

She delighted in raising her sons Pere Crawford Wickes, David Lee Wickes, and Roger Drew Wickes, each 8 years apart. She was active in the community, recognized for leading her 4H girls in Lebanon PA and teaching homemaking, cooking, sewing and life skills. She was featured several times in the newspaper and on television. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter, making many of her own and her sons' clothes.

She married George C. Donovan on November 22, 1978 in Bradenton FL while working at the junior college. She enjoyed camping, boating, picnics on the seashore, and travelling both domestically and abroad. She visited her parent's homeland of Sweden a few times to visit cousins and relatives there, and was very proud of her Swedish heritage and being a first generation American. Flo was always a joyful and a shining light of happiness to everyone she ever met.

What changes she saw! The Great Depression, World War II and many other global conflicts including the Cold War and nuclear weapons. She tells of the time her family got their first car, and navigated to the Jersey Shore without maps, paved roads, and reliable gas stations, riding in the rumble seat. Over her lifetime she saw satellites get launched in space, men on the moon, highways, inventions and modern manufacturing methods, mass-produced clothes, the microwave, cellular telephone systems and the birth of computers and email. She was blessed with a good life, and lived in love.
