Obituary of Donald Bruce Gates
Donald Bruce Gates (1951-2024) … And in the end The love you take Is equal to the love you make -The Beatles Donald Bruce Gates 72 of Merritt Island Florida, died of Cancer of the liver and COVID related pneumonia on February 9th, 2024. He was born in San Bernadino, CA in 1951 to Floyd Gates & Elizabeth (Betty) Elkins. Floyd was in the Armed Forces and traveled extensively. Betty worked for the Boy Scouts of America. Don attended Lake Charles High School & McNeese St University. Don worked most of his life as a Construction Manager and loved the complicated work that he undertook.
SPOUSE – Don met the love of his life, Diane Schroeder in 1984 on the coast of Florida. Don felt an instant connection with Diane and often remarked on her beauty. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married Nov 24th 1984
CHILDREN – Don and Diane had one Son who meant the world to them. Jeff grew up in a house full of music and life. A strong moral compass always guided the family.
GRANDCHILDREN – Though he loved dirt biking, political debate and being in the ocean, Don’s favorite role was that as a grandparent. He treasured his time with his grandkids and loved being their Papa, never failing to have a quick lesson handy, or telling them of his exploits as a young man in Louisiana.
PETS – Don had a soft spot for his furry friends, treating each and every one like the valuable family member they were. To this day Jeff can hear Don calling him “Jake” (the name of the smartest dog that ever lived). Buddy was Don’s current furry companion, a gentle and loyal dog if there ever was one.
HOBBIES – Everyone who knew Don knew how much he loved motorcycles. He bought vehicles specifically tailored to support his love of racing Hare Scrambles and camping at the races in the back of the truck.
Don was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Floyd A Gates & Elizabeth E Menge, His Brother, Michael G Gates and Sister Deborah A Menge. Don is survived by his wife Diane, Son and Daughter-in-law Jeff & Lisa, his Grandchildren Collin, Sean & Blake and his Brother and Sister in-law Roland & Laura Gates.
A Celebration of Life will be held March 3th 2024 at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Merritt Island Florida. Donations In Don’s name made to the American Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
