Obituary of Carol Wittig

Carol Wittig (Waters), of Palm Bay FL died peacefully in the presence of her family, on February 7th 2024 at the age of 85.  She was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, November 12th 1938, to Leonard Waters and Lillian Kausabuski.  Carol was a driven 17 year old High School graduate that entered Nursing School at Madison General, graduating in 1959.  Carol married Richard Wittig, University of Wisconsin graduate and Rose Bowl football player, in 1962.  They bought their first home in Moline, Illinois.  Carol continued to work as a nurse until starting a family in 1967 and eventually moved to the home they custom designed and built in Brighton, Michigan, at the base of Mt. Brighton.  Carol loved being a mom to son, Wade Wittig of Zachary, LA and daughters, Michele Warr and Pamela Twardzik of Palm Bay, FL.  Carol was not afraid to try new things. While raising 3 children, she earned her English degree from Eastern Michigan and also became a real estate agent. She endured kids with broken bones, crashed cars, musical instruments and chemistry sets.  In Michigan, the Wittig’s loved camping at Silver Lake and driving Orange Crush, a dune buggy, that was a Mother’s Day gift. We all looked forward to the age of 10 when we learned how to drive a stick shift in the dunes.   They often loaded the family van to the gills for various sporting events and were home to Iggy Field, epic leaf piles, second-story deck watermelon spitting contests, snow tunneling, tobogganing down Mt. Brighton, neighborhood kick the can games, BB gun fighting, Charlie’s Angles games in the woods and huge 4th of July pig roasts. In 1982 the Wittig family said goodbye to Brighton and moved to Longwood, FL where the new neighborhood was as big as the town of Brighton.  Carol was a High School English teacher for Lake Brantley HS in Altamonte Springs, FL.  She attended every game of her three children’s baseball, volleyball, basketball or softball games.   When all of her children graduated from High School in 1990, Carol returned to nursing, working as a Quality Assurance Nurse for the state of Florida. She eventually oversaw and retired as the Quality Assurance Nurse of Organ Procurement for the state.  In her retirement, Carol enjoyed supporting her 10 grandchildren and 3 great grands in their academic and athletic endeavors.  She was a life-long, share-holding Packer fan and a bird enthusiast, which led her to become an airsoft pistol expert battling squirrels and adding silly antics to our lives.  She would want to be remembered as intelligent, artistic, classy, feisty, generous, light-hearted, gullible (a good sport), and a beloved matriarch of our family.  She was surrounded by love and laughter to the end.  A Memorial service to honor her life will be held Sunday February 18th from 2-4 at Ammen Family Funeral Care, 1001 Hickory St. Melbourne.
