Obituary of Veronica Enid Samuel
Veronica Enid Samuel (known as Nixcy to her family) passed away peacefully on May 17, 2023, at the age of 78 with loving family members at her side. She was born on October 29, 1944, in San Juan, Trinidad, to Kenrick and Agnes Samuel. She was the eighth of 14 children.
Veronica graduated from the Institute of Commerce with certificates in advanced typing and shorthand. She immigrated to the United States in her early 20s and earned her G.E.D. She also did hairdressing and sewing courses. Veronica worked at Citibank on Fifth Avenue in New York as a teller and later was a head teller for specialized business accounts. After her retirement in 1996, she moved to Palm Bay, Florida, with her sisters Janet (now deceased) and Maureen.
She was a devout Catholic and became an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, volunteering as an usher until the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. For many years she volunteered at the food pantry of St. Vincent de Paul and at various church functions, and she made generous donations to several charities.
Veronica was a very honest, kind, generous, hardworking person, and she loved all children. She truly believed her purpose in life was to protect and care for children. Over the years she helped with the care of many children in the family and babysat for the three children of her nephew Charles over a period of 13 years, until she became ill in November 2021.
She enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad. She liked solving difficult crossword puzzles, cooking West Indian food, reading motivational and liturgical books, and spending time with family, and she was sometimes the family hairdresser and barber.
Veronica was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Some of her friendships lasted from childhood until her final day. She never once complained during her illness. She was joyful and had a sense of humor; her laughter was infectious. Veronica enjoyed being playful and sharing stories with her great-nieces and great-nephews.
Veronica is survived by her siblings Gloria, Eileen (Carl), Mona (Robert), Maureen, Ingrid, Lauren, Cornelius, and Caril, as well as one niece, 10 nephews and their families, and her cousin Elizabeth and her family, in addition to numerous other cousins and good friends.
Her spirit will live inside our hearts forever, and we are comforted by knowing that she has a permanent place in the Lord’s home. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
