Obituary of Sara Chamless Austin
Sara Austin left our world on July 28, 2022. She had battled dementia for the past few years and has gone to join the love of her life, Ted. The family will be eternally grateful to Discovery Village in Melbourne for the excellent care they took of Sara, and to her caretaker, Constance Burrell, whom Sara loved dearly.
Sara was the oldest child of Stuart Chamless and Elizabeth Folmar Chamless. She was born on August 18, 1934 in Saint Clair County, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward "Ted" Austin; her brother Joe Chamless; and her granddaughter Harper. She leaves six daughters Pam Parker (Frank Witbeck), Laine Randall (Ashley), Susan Austin, Beth Austin, Kristen Harris, and Faren Ahrens (T.J.). She is also survived by ten grandchildren, and seven (almost eight) great-grandchildren, and her brother Iva Chamless (Linda).
Sara attended Huntingdon College, graduating in 1956 with a degree in Biology. She attend the Physical Therapy School at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota before beginning her career as a physical therapist. She met her husband at Lloyd Nolan Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama and they moved to Cocoa, Florida in 1962. She continued her work as a physical therapist, working for Wuesthoff Hospital and the Brevard County School Board while her daughters were growing up.
There will be a memorial service at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Cocoa on Saturday, September 3 at 11:00 A.M., followed by a "gathering" in Thursby Hall. The family requests that instead of sending flowers to the service, please send them to someone who needs to have their day brightened or send them to Discovery Village in memory of Sara Austin.
