I was saddened to hear of Jim's untimely passing. We were on crew together in the 564th SMS. A fine officer and a good man. Sincere condolences to the family.

Jim was without a doubt the finest man and leader I’ve ever had the honor to know and call my friend. We met at Malmstrom AFB in the the last 90s and I had the pleasure of working for Jim when he was a Squadron Commander, it truly was the highlight of my career. I will miss Jim but know that he is doing well with all the other missileers that went before. God bless him and his family.

The Plattsmouth Bible Church family mourns the loss of Jim, but we're so thankful to know he is with our Father, healed and whole! Lots of memories of Jim & Kathy at our church! We held our Community Food Pantry on Friday, and remembered Jim's vital role in setting this ministry up at PBC so many years ago! Thank you Jim & Kathy for your years of love & ministry at PBC! Praying steadily for you as you navigate this time.

Dear Kathy and family - please accept my family's heartfelt condolences during this time of great loss in your lives. I served under Jim's leadership in the 564th MS at Malmstrom AFB in the mid to late 90s. It's really hard to capture the impact that Jim had on my life, as well as so many other young Airmen who looked up to him. He was demanding, yet at the same time, compassionate and approachable. I will never forget the passionate speech he gave our squadron at a time when some of us lost sight of timeless values such as integrity and honor. Jim wasn't worried about being a popular leader, instead he had the courage to address the issue head on. Needless to say, he got our attention and I think in the long run, we were all better for it. As Jim rests in peace, I will always remember him as a caring human being of utmost character. May God bless and sustain you!

Colonel Jim Hegarty was my dear friend for over 40 years. We first met in 1980 when I was assigned to the 564th Missile Squadron where Jim was a missile launch officer. For the following 4 years we worked together, and at one timed were crewed together as a missile combat crew. In the years that followed, Jim and I shared some assignments, but always stayed in touch when we were separated. When Jim retired from the USAF, I had the pleasure of presiding over his ceremony. Since that time we continued to be close friends, both in Nebraska when we both worked as defense contractors. After Jim and Kathy moved to Florida, Kate and I would visit them there, and when they were back in Omaha we always got together, even if it was just for breakfast. I treasured those times and will miss them dearly. Jim was an outstanding officer and leader, as is testament to his promotion to Colonel. Only 2% of all officers who enter the USAF are ever promoted to Colonel. As great of an officer as he was, he was even a better man. Jim is the best human being I've ever known. I'm so very fortunate that for 40 years I had him as a close friend. My deepest sympathies go to Kathy and the rest of Jim's family. He will be truly missed by many, many people. God bless you all.
