I am privileged to have been a friend of Duff's for more than 50 Years. He was kind, generous, irrepressible, irascible, energetic, and funny. My first memory of him was at University of Louisville in 1970. His father, whom he called "the Colonel"was a financial aid counselor there. He walked me across campus to his father's office, regaling me with frightening tales of the Colonel, so that by the time we arrived, i was sweating and stuttering through my interview with him. When I came out Duff was doubled over laughing. He was always joking and always energetic. He wrangled all of his friends up on Sunday mornings to play volleyball, ride bikes or swim.
When he first began to work in oncology, I ask how he could deal with the constant specter of death. I remember thinking what a great doctor he would be. He said "we are all going to die. None of us know when. It is my job to help people live as best they can"
He was the embodiment of living a good life and is a model for us all.
He will be missed by all. I am hoping his family will imagine him at peace after a life well lived
