As a member of the same book club, I was very fortunate to have known Carl. He was a kind, outgoing person who ended our meetings with his questions on trivia. What drew me to Carl was his time in the Air Force. This led to fascinating discussions about the contribution of bombers in World War II and his own service in the Strategic Air command. Being a movie fan, I brought up one of my favorite movies, 12 O’Clock High with Gregory Peck, who took over the 918th Bomb Group in England (part of the Eighth Bomber Command) to straighten out what I thought was a serious management problem. Carl corrected me by saying it was leadership, not management, that was lacking. I immediately realized that Carl was correct. His book selections were also excellent. I remember Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, the autobiography of Chuck Yeager, and Bomber Mafia by Malcolm Gladwell. I always learned from his insights about the human condition. I will miss him.
