Obituary of Daniel Merrill Rogers

Daniel Merrill Rogers of Melbourne Beach, FL passed away on May 24, 2021 at the age of 81. Dan was born on July 1, 1939 in Toledo, Ohio to William Daniel and Cora Marie (Myers) Rogers. He met his wife, Judith Heuer, at DeVilbiss High School in Toledo and they were married in July of 1961.

 

Dan graduated in 1961 from the University of Toledo with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He spent the first portion of his career in Toledo, working for Surface Combustion designing heat-treating and dehumidification equipment and industrial furnaces. While in Toledo, he also worked for the DeVilbiss Corporation researching and developing various air spraying systems. In 1977, Dan and his family moved to Meadville, PA when he took a position with Sunbeam Equipment Co, which later became SECO/Warwick Corporation. While there, he continued to work with industrial furnaces and heat-treating equipment. In 1994, Dan and Judy relocated to Melbourne Beach, FL where he worked as an Engineering Consultant until he retired.

 

Dan was an avid sailor for most of his adult life. While he lived in Toledo, he enjoyed racing his Interlake on the Maumee River and on Lake Erie. Soon after the move to Meadville, he switched to a Flying Scott and continued to race on several small lakes in Pennsylvania, New York and Florida. After their move Florida, he and Judy took up bicycling. In addition to riding almost daily near their home, they spent several summers riding their recumbent bikes on trails around Leelenau and Traverse City in Michigan.

 

Dan is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years; his daughters Janice (David} Mays of Melbourne Beach, FL and Susan (William} Bruss of Evans, GA; his four grandchildren Carolyn (Robert) Williams of Butler, PA, Sarah Mays of Melbourne Beach, William Bruss of Evans, GA and Kathryn Bruss (fiance Andrew Greenhill) of Colorado Springs, CO; and his brothers James (Marcia) Rogers of Howard, OH and George Rogers of Beaver Creek, OH.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Carol (Tom) Rier of Clark Lake, Ml.

 

Funeral services will be held at Advent Lutheran Church in Melbourne Beach at a later date.
