Obituary of Cathy Gavel
Cathy Gavel passed away peacefully in her sleep during the early morning hours of March 30, 2021. She received the sacrament of healing from the Roman Catholic Church.
Born on November 21, 1946 in Perth Amboy, NJ, Catherine A. Gavel was raised in Fords a section of Woodbridge, NJ. She graduated from Our Lady of Peace elementary school and from Woodbridge High School in 1965.
She attended Trenton State College and received a Bachelors in Arts on June 2, 1968. She participated in a work-study program with the Ewing Township Police Department. Upon graduation, she received a New Jersey certificate as a teacher of the handicapped and taught special education in Burlington, NJ before marrying John Gavel on July 12, 1969 in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Perth Amboy.
She became certified by the state of Minnesota as a teacher and taught children with developmental and emotional disabilities in Carlton, MN for four years. She also taught elementary school in Brandon, FL.
She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years John Gavel, son John Gavel, and daughter Clare A. (Nicholas) Saint Gabriel. Four grandchildren, Adelie, River, Duncan and Xander Saint Gabriel.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Agnes T. Chungo and her brother Richard J. Chungo.
She was a Bronze Life Master in duplicate bridge and lived life to the fullest. She traveled the world and visited Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada, Egypt, Israel, most of Europe and the United States including Hawaii.
