Carol, it has taken a few weeks to write this because it’s so hard to know what to say. We are so very sorry and sad to hear of the passing of Jimmy-John. We have so many memories (some I can’t write here!). We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. We are so sorry he is gone. He was a big part of our lives. We will miss him, but never forget him! Julie, your Dad was a great guy! So sorry for your loss.
Love, Joe & Linda O’B

Jim was a Southwest Philly original.
Whether he was harmonizing with a Chester Avenue street corner Doo Wop group, demonstrating his tremendous athleticism on the Basketball courts, or baseball and football fields at Kingsessing and Bartram HS, it seemed like there was no sport or anything else that he couldn't excel at. Mixed with all this was Jim's journalistic reporting for the famous SW Philly now and again publication, The Ironjaw Blab. His lyrical offerings to certain Ironjaw Fight Songs and his impromptu stream of quips and one liners couldn't be topped. Who, among us, knew at the time what a frumius Bandersnatch was, anyway.
Then there was his active participation in countless hi jinks that have served as the fondest of memories whenever the old crowd gathers. In any neighborhood fun-loving activity, Jim was always a very welcome addition and he will be sorely missed. His friendship, wit and good humor - irreplaceable.
We extend heartfelt condolences to the Coan family. May Jim rest in peace.

I lived next door to Jim and Carol Coan for 39 years, in near-twin houses barely thirty feet apart. I often told friends who didn't know them that the Coans were straight out of a Design-a-Neighbor Box. Not only was there never a cross word in four decades, but we truly enjoyed each others' company. Our kids, within a few years of each other, played together. With two enthusiastic male neighbors, Jim and I built huge parade floats each July. Our kids all dressed up for the theme and rode on the floats, and we won prizes for our efforts.
Jim silver-coated my flat roof twice...he helped move furniture up and down very tight winding staircases. He even managed to laugh --- for a while --- when he was pinned against a staircase wall by a sofa that had no business even trying to be moved into a basement.
Genial, athletic, a great story-teller --- and above all, a fabulous laugher. I really, really loved that booming laugh.
Things changed after Bridie's untimely death, and the neighborhood changed dramatically when Carol and Jim moved to Florida. I only saw them a few times over the past few years when they visited Lansdowne. Can't tell you how much I miss them, and now, more than ever, Jim.
There's a line in an old Ian Tyson song that says: I'm a better man for just the knowing of you.
