Dr Maul was one of the best educators I've ever had, hands down. He had a mirror in his office, so when you walked in he would look over with a big smile and "Hey Dave" and hear out whatever questions you had about the course material or guidance or life in general.
I remember one time in particular in 2017, we were on a class trip on a research vessel and the waves were big and choppy. About half of the class was below deck passed out from the dramamine or wishing they were, and he made sure to check on everyone to make sure they were okay. He even fell down on the deck at one point and popped right back up before anyone could even reach down to help him, at the age of 79! If I live to embrace life half as much as he did, I'll consider it a life worth living. He'll be missed and continues to inspire every life he touched.

Dr. Maul was such an amazing man who touched so many lives. He will be missed immensely. Working in catering gave me the opportunity to cross paths with him often. I sure enjoyed our scouting talks. Sending hugs and prayers to the family.

Dr. Maul was one of the first people I met in the FIT office when I came for my PhD in 2014. I remember meeting him thinking wow, he is there to help students in anyway possible. I knew from then I wanted to take his class so I signed up for physical oceanography. I remember it being tough since I haven’t had calculus since my bachelors degree. He was always there to offer extra help and make sure he asked me enough questions to really make me understand material. He was a legend in our department and I really got to know him well since he was on my committee for my PhD. He always said hey and asked me how life was. He was always concerned about students and acted like my Dad making sure all was well. Throughout the time I’ve been at FIT I’ve had some very interesting office visits to get to know him and talk oceanography with him. He always had an open door policy which was great even to just talk on a stressful day. All of the students and faculty he touched will continue his passion and enthusiasm for oceanography. I’m so glad I was able to know Dr. Maul because he was special and will always be considered a legend in my book. You will be missed!

Dr. Maul was like an extra grandpa or father to me and so many others. It was an absolute blessing to be his student and friend and to complete multiple degrees under his advising (6 years total); the photo I attached was taken after my MS ceremony. He truly made the world a better place: at Florida Tech, at church, at Scouts, and most of all at home.
Patti, Anne, Carol, and Christopher, my heart goes out to all of you at this time. I will eat a PB&J with an apple for lunch today in his honor!
