In November of last year we decided to have a short trip to Florida to get away from the cold. Although we had flown into Miami, we rented a car and drove up to Port St Lucie to meet GE for lunch at the Olive Garden there. She was so proud to show off her new car, cherry red of course. We sat for a few hours, eating bowls of soup and salad, listening to her tell old stories. She talked about how she met my grandfather Martin, her time in the Navy Reserve while simultaneously dad was in the Army. I wish I had recorded these stories- you never could tell which were 100% accurate unless someone corroborated them, but they were always fun to listen to.
We pestered a few hostesses to get this photo, and I’m very glad we did.
She told me, just the day before she died, that growing up all she had wanted was to join the Navy. She wanted the camaraderie, and to be a career woman. Back in the early 60s, that idea must’ve seemed so far off to a 20 year old Irish Catholic girl who got married that year instead. I think she was surprised to see how much expectations of what a woman should be changed over the course of that decade. She didn’t get to have her lifelong navy career, but she did join the Reserve, and I’m sure that was a big source of joy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ellen years ago. She was a very sweet lady. Ellen always spoke her mind and was on point with her opinions. She had a great sense of humor and was fun to be around. She was a remarkable quilter. Ellen raised a wonderful son that I am proud to call "uncle". Rest easy Mrs. Ellen. You'll be missed dearly!❤❤
