Obituary of Imogene Sherwood Davies

Full of life and full of love, Imogene Sherwood Davies was one of this world’s most precious souls. Born in Miami, Florida, and raised on the coconut plantation on Key Biscayne made her a true Florida native. Imogene was the daughter of Archibald Tice Sherwood and Marie Fischer, a first-generation German immigrant, and as the oldest child she helped raise her three younger brothers: Nial Frank, Danton Tice and Ronald Leonard Sherwood. The family moved to the Miami “mainland” in 1946, where Imogene graduated from Edison High School, later married, and raised three children of her own. Her daily example, energy, good-natured spirit and zest for life will long be remembered by her family, friends and extended community with the deepest regard. Among so many, she leaves her two cherished children and their immediate families, Kathleen Ruth Davies (husband Ricky Rickart and sons Glade and Lucas Gene) and Glen Sherwood Davies (wife Maggie and children), her brother Danton T. Sherwood, her sisters-in-law Joan “Dee Dee” Davies, Joan Sherwood, and Frances Ann Sherwood. She joins those preceding her in death, her loving husband Arthur “Buddy” Davies, her youngest child and joy of her life, Arthur Bruce Davies, and her best friend, Helen Ann Botsford. Ever energetic, athletic, and curious, Imogene loved photography, gardening, ceramic art, bottle hunting, and all manner of wildlife and outdoor activities. She was continuously involved in social, environmental, and volunteer causes both local and global, including the Uniformed Services Overseas (USO), American Red Cross, Girl Scouts of America, Allapattah Women’s Club, and Election Poll/Voter Registration. She acted for the acceptance and education of children across all ethnic, economic, and social lines by working as a teacher’s assistant at Madison High School and participating in outreach programs such as Rolling Readers. Many children came to know her as their “Aunt Gene.” Imogene had that rare ability to appreciate each given day, yet lived with a commitment to the Earth and its inhabitants far beyond her own time here, and possessed, not surprisingly, an intimate bond to the history and habitat preservation of her beloved native Florida. A time to gather and share in the celebration of Imogene’s life will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, 950 Malabar Rd SE, Palm Bay, FL 32907 321-724-2224.
