Gwen– I am sorry to hear about Don’s (“Sparky’s”) passing. He was a treasured friend to my Dad. He was also a much-needed mentor and friend to me when I was as very young and completely clueless. As my very first “Real Boss”, he taught me respect for others and the value of hard work. He was a good and kind man. I know he will truly be missed by many.
Sincerely,
Dick Stolcenberg

Gwen,
Just got the news about the passing of Don, and send our deepest sympathy and condolences. Sparky, as you know, was a legend within MRPA, the Great Lakes Region and NRPA. It is amazing to look backward and be unable to find anytime when he did not step up the assist, solve and lead. The combination of attitude, good humor, wonderful hospitality and loyalty really set the bar high for public servants, which was always second to “family” in his great personality and huge network. In our era, from 1972 to 1994, there was never a doubt when his name popped up. Sparky might have surpassed Sparty, as an MSU fan. There was never a doubt, “Blue” would never fit in his closet. Kindest regards,
D

Gwen and Family, I’m deeply saddened by the news of Don’s passing. Don gave me (a young Parks and Recreation Director at the time) the best advise I ever received as a professional. He said to me “You’ve hired good people, now let them do their job and but make sure they know that you are there to help and support them when they need it!” I lived by that advise and am forever grateful to Don for sharing it with me. I am truly honored to have had him as a friend!

Dear Gwen,
So sad to hear of Don’s passing. There are so many memories it’s hard to pick just one. He always encourage us to grow whether it was to create a senior softball team, continue our education, join MRPA or get certified. Looking back we all grabbed every opportunity and learned a lot along the way. He was a leader in our field and definitely left his foot print in this world. Please let us know when you have a memorial service for him.
Our sympathies to you and your family Gwen.

Gwen worked for Don for over 30 years, he knew he had men that knew their jobs and stood behind us, sometimes we didn’t exactly know it but in the long run it always worked out. Sad to hear he passed but sounds like you two enjoyed life to the fullest. I hope you are doing well and continue to live life to the fullest.
