Obituary of John Joseph Callahan

John Joseph Callahan, 52, of Melbourne Beach, passed away on Saturday, March 17th. He was born on August 24, 1965 in Hartford, Connecticut to Edwin J. and Maria C. Callahan. John was very much loved and spoiled by his three sisters, who fought over who would feed him, take him for walks or babysit for him. As a toddler, he was known for taking long-distance rides on his tricycle with all the neighborhood kids running after him to bring him home. He brought laughter, side-splitting laughter, wherever he went. His humor was dry and quirky and he had a knack for ludicrous exaggeration that took you by surprise — the best kind of humor. John loved playing golf as much as he hated the cold of New England. His last occupation was as a professional caddy at Red Stick in Vero Beach. He also was a caddy at the Hartford Country Club in Hartford, Connecticut. John was an organ donor and his gifts have already saved the lives of three people. John was a 1983 graduate of Enrico Fermi High School in Enfield, Connecticut. He graduated from Asnuntuck Community College and attended Eastern Connecticut State University. He leaves behind his sons who he adored, Nicklaus (16 years old) and Evan (14 years old); his sisters Teresa, Diana and Patricia and his brother, James; his nephews, Jonathan Leary, Daniel Callahan and Joseph Callahan; and two nieces, Stephanie Callahan and Brianna Leary Pilling as well as two great nephews, Alex Parton and Xavier Mercado; and two great nieces, Emma Pilling and Sofia Mercado. He lived life to the fullest. He lived hard and fast. Maybe someday we’ll come to understand that it is indeed “better to burn out than fade away” but right now it hurts too much.
