Obituary of Amalia Padilla

On September 7, 2017 Amalia Padilla peacefully passed away at home in Palm Bay, Fl where she was loved and cared for by her niece, Maria Padilla ~ Goldman until her passing. Amalia was lovingly called by her nieces and nephews, “Titi Mae”. This became her name by most who met her. “Mayo” as she was called by her siblings, was born in Ponce, PR on July 12, 1933 to Juan Padilla and Monserrate Tricoche of Barrio San Anton where the family history reaches back over 100 years! She was the youngest female of the Padilla’s natural children. Amalia began working in Ponce, PR as a practical nurse and went on to develop her career as a Resgistered Nurse after moving to New York City in the late 1950’s. Mae learned English and became a real asset as a bi~lingual nurse at St. Barnabas Hospital in NY. She was dedicated to her nursing career and was a mentor and a helper to many who came from other countries to become nurses until she retired in 1996 and returned home to her beloved Island of Puerto Rico. During her years in NY Mae had an active social life with family and friends. Titi loved her family, especially her nieces and nephews as she never had children of her own. She lived life with gusto traveling to Europe and Mexico. Her favorite social activity was dancing. The music would go on and Titi would start moving! Even toward the end of her life, bedridden and barely able to move…her foot would move to the rhythm of whatever music would be playing. After retiring Titi Mae fell upon difficult times. In San Juan she helped care for her sister Anna already in the throes of Alzheimer’s disease. Shortly thereafter, she herself fell ill to Alzheimer's and had to be cared for until the day she died. Throughout the progression of her disease she had lucid moments that both elicited painful recollections of what was ailing her and moments of no recognition of those closest to her. Titi Mae was always grateful for the love shown by those closest to her and those caring for her. Even when she could no longer communicate verbally, she was able to give a wink, a smile, or a gentle look of thankfulness to family, friends are caregiver. She will be missed until the day Jehovah God brings back all those in the Memorial tombs, just as He has promised to do! Amalia was preceded in death by her parents…Monserrate and Juan Padilla; her siblings…Luis Guillermo (Guillo) Padilla, (Mami) Carmen Padilla (Cubille), Elisantos (Eli) Padilla, Ana (Avo) Luisa Padilla (Perfecto), Luz Delia Padilla, Asuncion (Katy Detres) Padilla, Juan (Siete) Padilla, Norma y Mariluz Soto Pagan, and Compy. Amalia is survived by the remaining ones of her siblings, the last pillars of the Padilla family…the oldest Dolores Roque (Tata), living in NY; Jose Angel (Sandocan) Roque also in NY and Pedro Carbonell (Pitito) the youngest, in Florida…and a host on nieces and nephews throughout US and PR and their children and their children’s children 4 generations in some families.
