Obituary of Hugh Marshall McDougall

Melbourne – Hugh Marshall McDougall, 80, of Melbourne, Florida passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina to the late David J. McDougall, Jr. and Mary McDougall, where he spent 18 years of his early adolescence. Hugh Marshall is survived by his loving wife, Brenda McDougall; three daughters, Laura Ketterman, Marcie Dunn and Paige Harmon; a brother, David McDougall; granddaughter, Lauren Sagiao; grandson, Nathan Harmon; granddaughter, Taylor Harmon; granddaughter, Bonnie Ketterman; grandson, William Ketterman; two stepsons, Christopher and Steven Perreault; stepdaughter, Kelly Perreault; grandson, Conner Perreault; two granddaughters, Alexis and Willow Perreault; and grandson, Owen Perreault. Marshall enlisted in the United States Army for 4 years. He was equally well-pleased that he was a graduate of the University of Southwest Louisiana. Early in life, he met his first wife, Bonnie, and they were married for 37 years. Their union produced three beautiful daughters and five grandchildren. After the Army, he later transitioned into the United States Air Force where he proudly served and then retired after 20 years of service. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in Germany; he loved the German culture and the volksmarches with his family. While living in Germany, he was infamous for camping during the hottest months of the year with his three young children. Later, he was stationed in Vandenberg Air Force base in California and enjoyed the West Coast scenery including the tide pools. Bonnie preceded him in death in 1999. Later in life, he met Brenda and fell in love again. With Brenda in his life and by his side, he “found his back door into the Irish community.” Hugh became a great source of comfort to Brenda’s three children and became “Papa Hugh” to their grandchildren. Hugh and Brenda loved to travel and had the chance to visit Alaska, Ireland, Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mexico as well as extensive trips in the United States. Nearest and dearest to his heart were his visits to St. Augustine, Florida during the holidays. Hugh was a lover of music and enjoyed all kinds of music ranging all the way from the Roaring 1920’s to current day; he had over 2,000 songs on his Iphone alone. He was known for his love of animals but unbeknownst to most, he was a closet cat lover. His dog, Angus, was very special to him and in a house full of girls, it was his way of having “another male.” He named everything, including his car, Angus as a running joke to keep the testosterone balance. Halloween was his true pride and joy. He was known for having elaborate haunted houses where he performed for the community. He was known to mail Halloween gifts to family members every year to keep the Spirit of Halloween alive. Hugh had a huge sense of humor and was known as a bit of a jokester. Hugh was a true fighter, he fought and won a courageous battle with cancer. The family requests friends and family to leave a comment with their favorite “Hugh story,” memory or anecdote.
