Obituary of Auttis James Cox
Auttis James Cox, 86, passed away on September 22, 2018, in Hazard, Kentucky after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born in 1931 in Floyd County, Kentucky, the son of William and Myrtle Cox.
Auttis completed high school in Ohio where he worked on his family’s farm. He met Norma Jean Fetters, the love of his life, while attending trade school in Chicago. They were married 58 years until her death in 2009.
Auttis honorably served his nation in the Ohio Air National Guard during the early years of his marriage to Norma. After completing his duty, Auttis moved his family to Melbourne, Florida, where he and Norma founded Cox’s Drive-In TV.
Building on the success of Drive-In TV, Auttis and Norma opened The Hanging Basket and Easy-Tyme Rentals in Melbourne, Palm Bay and Cocoa. These stores were favorites of many Brevard County residents.
In addition to being known as a businessman, Auttis was an avid golfer, scuba diver, private pilot and world traveler.
Auttis was baptized on Easter Sunday 1983 and was a dedicated member of the Myrtle Old Regular Baptist Church in West Melbourne. He enjoyed visiting other Old Regular Baptist Churches as he traveled through America.
He will be forever remembered and cherished by his children: Rebecca Padgett (Dr. Steven) of Montgomery, AL, Dan Cox of Morganton, GA and Dawn Heberlein (Dale) of Lakeland, FL.
In addition to his children, Auttis is survived by his brother Carles, sister Glenna; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and a host of loved cousins, nieces and nephews; Barbara, his second wife who took care of him as his Parkinson’s disease progressed.
He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Myrtle; brothers, Paul, Palmer and McClellen; sisters Geraldine and Loretta; wife Norma; son David and grandson Matthew.
The family will hold a viewing at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018, located at 1001 South Hickory Street in Melbourne.
Funeral services will start at noon on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Myrtle Old Regular Baptist Church, 2660 Brandywine Lane in West Melbourne. Burial next to Norma will immediately follow his funeral service in Florida Memorial Gardens, Rockledge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial gift be made to the New Salem Association of Old Regular Baptist Churches, your local hospice association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
