Obituary of Lorraine M. Hanson
Lorraine M. Hanson was born in Brooklyn, NY to Gertrude Zlatkin and Theodor Pedersen on July 3rd, 1934. She was raised by her mother who later married her step-father, Sam Schamikles, and had her baby brother, Jack. After graduating from Prospect Heights High School in 1952 she went to work at NYU as a bookkeeper. She met the love of her life, George, soon after at a birthday party. Her parents decided to move to L.A., California. George followed her out there even though her step-father was against the relationship, going as far as to offer him money to break it off. After 8 months in California, Lorraine moved back to NY where they were married on February 20, 1954 at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Lorraine and George spent 63 years happily married before his passing on June 15, 2017. Their first three children, Christopher George Hanson, Carol Lynn Hanson and Susan Marie Schmidt (Drew) were born in NY. They then moved their family to New Jersey, where the next four children, Patricia Joan Hanson, Pamela Ann Hanson (PK Reilly), Lorraine Marie Rendon (Fernando) and Karen Mary Hanson-Jellison, were born. A near-fatal auto accident brought them to Florida where the last of their eight children, Juliet Grace Rebelo (Cy), was born. Mary Derby (Eric) is the wonderful “adopted daughter” we all call sister.
Lorraine was a homemaker and mother first, but her most favorable career was working for the Central Brevard Library in Cocoa for the 16 years preceding her retirement. She was always proud of her academics in school, her family and her team as the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary President. She and George enjoyed their volunteer commitments at Westminster Asbury Arms, where they resided the last 11 years and also the years they spent as cast members with the Cocoa Village Playhouse. Her favorite pastimes were knitting and reading.
Lorraine has 13 grandchildren, Brad Grant (Debbie), Eva Algermissen (Patrick), Daniel Schmidt, David Schmidt (Lindsay), Katie Jackson, Brittany Jellison, Jessica Hanson, Joshua Jennings, Patty Rendon, Dylan Jellison, Christopher Jennings, Molly Renninger (Michael), Lauren Rebelo and 6 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Anastasia, Jackson, Wesley, Daciana and Wolfgang.
Lorraine was loved by those who knew her and a friend to everyone she met. She will be forever missed!
