Obituary of John Anthony McGowan

July 18, 1933 – June 1, 2018 John was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from East Providence High School. He opened a small fruit stand in Smithfield, RI, after graduation, but had to leave to serve his country in the US Army in the Korean War. During this time, his father ran the fruit stand. After 2 years, he returned, to resume business at the fruit stand. Later he expanded his business interests by adding Mac’s Package Store of Smithfield on the same property. He retired and moved to Florida with his wife, Emily. They initially lived in Barefoot Bay and later built a home in Palm Bay, Florida. He enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, golf, and especially embarking on cruises of the many seas of the world. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret McGowan, his stepson, James Ross. John is survived by his wife Emily, two daughters, Robin D. McGowan of Tonawanda, New York, Margaret E. McGowan of Palm Bay, Florida, and two stepsons, William and Glenn Ross, and a sister, Margaret Hebert. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. There will be no formal service or memorial. In lieu of flowers to the family, donations may be made in John’s name to a favorite charity.
