Wilma Deweese

Obituary of Wilma Faye Deweese

Wilma Faye Deweese, 72, passed away on Monday, August 19th in Rockledge, Florida Born on June 5, 1947 in Salyersville Kentucky to Silas and Desadrea Carty, “Wiggie” (as she was known to those closest to her) was raised on a farm in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains with her Sister and Brothers, Donna Yockel, James (Bubo) Carty and Larry Carty. She was shaped by her family, environment and the hollows of Magoffin County to grow into the strong and resilient woman who was loved by so many. In 1966, Wilma moved to Newark, Ohio where she took a job at the well known Deweese Brothers IGA grocery store. While working there as a cashier, she caught the eye of a young Robert (Bob) Deweese. Wilma, potentially suffering from a laps in judgment, agreed to date this Bob guy. Many years later, Wilma admitted that she agreed to date Bob more or less to get to know his horse Sony. But as fate would have it, Wilma found her lifelong soulmate. On October 1, 1967, Wilma married Bob and in the three years following, Bob deployed to Vietnam with the Navy. Wilma joined him when his ship returned to Norfolk, Virginia and the two of them made a home in a small one car garage that they rented. Though the accommodations were less than luxurious, my mother spoke so fondly of that time in their life. In early 1970, Bob was discharged from the Navy, and the couple returned home to Newark, Ohio. Later that November, Wilma gave birth to their first son, Scott, and in 1973 Jason, and in 1977, Matthew. In January 1979, the family moved to Valdosta, Georgia where for the next 5 ½ years, those boys grew and got into all kinds of trouble. It was in these formative years that Wilma earned a very special place in Heaven. In the summer of 1984, the family moved once again landing in Melbourne, Florida. Always the supportive mother, she attended our school events, sporting events and took us to church. She truly believed in all three of her boys and when she told us that we could do anything, we could be whatever we wanted, she really believed it. She believed in us. Two of us went on to become college graduates, veterans, husbands and fathers. One of us barely made it to adulthood and was taken away from us far too soon. Mom is with Mathew now. After raising three boys, Wilma was all too happy to have her two daughters Mae-Ling and Keri. Those daughters gave her something, I think she loved more than anything, her grandchildren. Zachary, Madilyn and Abigail were all enriched by Mimmie. Mimmie was an avid reader and was always up to speed with Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. She was eager to discuss the finer literary details in those fantasy worlds. She was also skilled angler. Mimmie never missed an opportunity to go fishing, a passion she shared with her family. Mimmie was also a card player and could never say no to a game of Rook, Skipbo or Uno with the kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews. She was a pretty good poker player too, but I am sure that she wouldn’t want anyone to know that. Wilma’s absence will leave a hole in our lives that can only partly be filled by her loving memory. She is greatly missed. Memorial Services are scheduled for 2:00PM Saturday, August 24th at First Baptist Church of Melbourne, 3301 Dairy Rd, Melbourne, Florida 32904.
