Obituary of Albert DeWitt “Red” Goodman
Albert DeWitt “Red” Goodman, age 96, passed on Saturday, 12, 2019 at his home in Palm Bay, Florida. Born on May 24, 1922 in Greenville SC to the late William L and Mattie Worley Goodman.
His family includes his wife of 46 years Shelley Ruschel Goodman; children, Rex Goodman (deceased), Mary Louise Dix, Herschel DeWitt, Debbie Kay Harris, William Albert Goodman and Shane Mathew Goodman; 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and his brother, Paul Goodman and sister in law Eloise.
Albert decided in June of 1958 to leave his beloved Gastonia, North Carolina and move his little family to Melbourne, Florida for better working opportunities as a house painter, in the booming Brevard County housing industry of the 1950’s and 60’s.
As a house painter by trade, he also was an avid collector and seller of antique glass and antique furniture. Other than his family, his joy was to do estate sales and flea markets. He would travel and down the highways and by ways to find that perfect deal! The family affectionately called him the Roadrunner. Needless to say, he was virtually one of the busiest people in Brevard County. Daddy the Wheeler Dealer as his son, Herschel would say.
His other joy was to play his prized, old classic records he had collected through the years, which was vast. When he needed quiet time, he would escape into his music room to enjoy his beloved records.
What the kids remember most about their dad was is love for them. Albert loved all of his children the same. Even as adults, he was always concerned for their welfare….were they eating….do they have a place to stay….are they staying out of trouble! If anything needed to be done, he did it or tried his best to get it done for his children and home. But the love of his life was his wife Shelley of 46 years. You could say, she was indeed his soulmate.
In his latter days, Albert would dream of returning to his beloved North Carolina one more time, to enjoy the memories of days gone by, but sadly his dreams of capturing those memories faded because of his health. The trip was never made. Your suffering on Earth is finished daddy. God has provided you with wings! Be free and fly to the top of those Carolina Mountains one last time! We’re gonna miss ya, daddy!
Until we meet again on the other side, remain busy with God’s Heavenly antiques and flea markets! We know you will! We will always remain Your Loving Family!
A memorial service to celebrate and remember his life will be on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 10am at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, 1001 Hickory Street, Melbourne. He will be placed at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery at 1:30 pm, also on Thursday, January 17th, with military honors.
