To Judy and family,
So sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. Ned and I always enjoyed our visits with you all. Ned and Lou enjoyed Rangeley equally, the only place where Ned could catch his breath. I haven’t been back since Ned’s death. I will be thinking of you all next summer. I will let Ruth know of your loss.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad’s passing……he was a great neighbor, and raised 4 great kids. He was good and kind to me, and a great sense of humor. It’s the little things we all remember. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy, old friends and neighbors.

My condolences to the Dorsey family. We were neighbors in the mid ’60’s . One of my favorite expressions he said frequently was describing the beauty of Rangeley saying “it’s God’s country.” Both he and Pauline were good friends with my mother; for that , I’m thankful. I have one more debt of gratitude to mention , to you “Big Lou.” I’d like to thankyou for letting me take the occasional short-cut through your yard after visiting the Whitney sisters without me meeting your.38.For that I will always have be grateful. Gull Pond and its year-round and summer residents miss you, Lou. You were certainly one of a kind.
I remember interviewing Lou for a story in The Rangeley Highlander a few years ago in Lou’s waters-edge camp (cabin to those “from away”)….I was amazed by all the golf trophys lining the shelves…he must have been a legend at every course he played regularly. Again….miss you, Lou.

Coach Dorsey was tough but kind. Especially to us kids who were never going to be “jocks”. I can’t rememer if he was my coach at
Long Lots or Staple (as if it matters), but I have incredibly good memories of him. And his positive attitude. For us kids. I was
always fond of Judy and send her my condolences. Coach Dorsey….thank you. For your teaching. Your guidance. And your service.

Yes it is so that Coach Dorsey had a moniker for me, but it was not only Huey Louie and Dewey, referring to my Twin Dave and my younger sister Amy, but he consistently told me I look like Doris Day. That was a clever ruse, because the laughs in his presence were never ending. He definitely had a contrasting presence, tough and resilient, at the same time sweet and kind; you definitely you knew you were in the presence of someone with character and charisma. After I left Saugatuck (K-6) I read in the news that he won a lottery prize, and after that I really did not hear much about him, until today, reading his tribute of accomplishments in family life and education. Rest easy, Coach D.

Coach Dorsey was God’s gift to all of us at Saugatuck Elementary. He set the tone for many athletes, taught how important work ethic was, how to be mentally tough and receive an education. I still have a letter Coach had sent home to my parents when I was in 5th grade. As I matured as an athlete I constantly read that letter, it was an inspiration. Coaches, Teachers, play an important role in young lives, just think how many lives Coach touched? When I think of Coach I think of a tough, caring, individual who displayed integrity and respect on a daily basis. When I wasn’t being a “good kid” Coach would walk up to me and say quietly “Don’t let me call Grandpa Jimmy (Valiante)”……..suddenly my attitude would change. Thank you Lord for allowing me to cross paths with Coach. May God bless the entire Dorsey family at this time and help them celebrate a life that will be cherished by many. RIP my friend, my Coach…..

Oh I am so sad to hear Coach Dorsey has died. Coach Dorsey was a very big part of my growing up and that includes all K-6 years at Burr Farms. He had been a good friend to my mother and I was a student at Burr Farms when she died. I think they worked together on Fresh Air projects. Coach was a huge support to me and my brothers and sisters (the five, later six, of us went K-6 in either Burr Farms or Saugatuck).
I was a shy kid. Coach Dorsey was something of a lifeline for me in those years. I was in a boxing class he taught after school at Burr Farms and I actually know something about boxing because of that. Two of my brothers, twins, were toddlers at the time and he was always checking-in with me on “Louie, Huey and Dewie,” his names for the toddler twins, always asking if there was a third, and trying to get a rise out of this shy kid. The other way he tried to get me worked up was by calling me “Pretty-Patty-Pettee.” I remember it clear as a bell today and it brings tears to my eyes. I see now that he had fun names for lots of kids. I would consider myself lucky to as an important fixture in child’s life as Coach Dorsey was in mine. RIP.

Love to Kim and family! I didn’t have him as a coach but knew him from Maine and from here. The last memory my husband Peter and I have of him he was shoring up his cottage in Maine and he was soooo funny! He did get his cottage straight though, through the laughter. He would sing Broadway tunes to us because we both had worked on Broadway. But at some point even the best of us have to go. Goodbye Lou! Love, Juliana

Lou was without question one of Westport’s treasures, particularly when it came to children. His warm glowing smile was so welcoming, he made you feel so special, whether it was the first time you met him or whether you were a Westport buddy for years, he just radiated warmth and caring.

Mr. Dorsey was a member at our credit union. He spoke often of missing his wife. We are sorry to hear of his passing. He was a vibrant person with a kind heart and will be always be remembered this way.

My condolence Kim,
Coach Dorsey was the best! He created a girls sixth grade basketball team and a boys sixth grade basketball team at Saugatuck School. We played all the elementary schools in town. We won the town championship and he gave us all golden basketball charms. I still have mine along with a picture of the team. He was fun, tough, caring and always concerned about his students. Years later he taught my children at Saugatuck School. I ran into him here in Westport a while back while he was visiting and he knew exactly who I was. Your dad was loved by many. May he rest in peace.

One of the best! He use to always kid me that my Dad carried a chocolate gun, it made me laugh as a student at Burr Farms but was so wonderful was years later when I was in high school, college, and beyond , when ever I had the pleasure to see coach Dorsey he would address me by name and still ask if my dad still had his chocolate gun. RIP Coach Dorsey.

My mother, Freda Brandt, was one of Lou’s Saugatuck El fellow teachers. She loved him both as an educator and as a friend in the trenches. Lou was also my Camp Mahackeno C.I.T instructor, so our admiration for him as an educator and as a man was a family affair. He was the kind of family member any family would love to have and many do. And he left his mark on so many of us, particularly his love of learning and of sport. They were one in the same thing to him and he passed that appreciation on to each of the people he touched.

My father in law Papa Lou was a great man. A second father to me we spent many many days together over the 35 years I knew him. I have so many memories I could mention. Some of the best were of times when he and my mother in law Pauline would stay with us as they passed through on their way to or from their Snowbird homes in ME. and FL. Simple memories of simple conversations in the car with my father in law on our way to grab coffee and a pastry. That was one of his favorite things to do, he always had a sweet tooth. We would drive to one or more of my offices to check on or mind the store as he would say. As we rode along he would share many stories of his life and work with me and we grew ever closer. I will miss him as I have missed my mother in law for the rest of my days. Rest in peace Papa Lou. Until we meet again at that big golf game in the sky.
