Obituary of Glenda B. Mayhew

Glenda B. Mayhew, aged 76 years, 4 months, and 26 days passed from this world on the afternoon of the 2nd of October.  Mom passed from post-surgical complications following a bout with colon cancer at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida. My mom is survived by her husband Stan (Palm Bay, FL), her sole remaining sibling Brenda (Chester, MD), and her loving sons Barry (Centerville, OH) and Brian (Palm Bay, FL). Her extended family includes her nephews Mark Bourne (Mooresburg, TN) and Mike Bourne (Chattanooga, TN), her nieces Tara Weeks (Baltimore, MD) and Karen Stoddard (Bremerton, WA). Mom was born in Rogersville, TN, the third of four children born to Raymond and Nina Bourne. Her father performed duties as a heavy equipment mechanic while her mother raised their children at home. At the age of 13, the family relocated to Fries, VA. Glenda and Brenda graduated from Fries High School in May of 1961. Both were selected for academic scholarships to attend Radford College (now Radford University). After graduation in 1964, Mom married my father in July 1964 and three years later, I was born. My father was an Engineer for NASA and later defense industry related activities and my mother initially taught business at Kecoughtan and Bethel High Schools in Hampton, Virginia. After the birth of Brian, Mom chose to remain home to raise us. Years later, after we left home, Mom chose to reenter the workplace as an Executive Administrative Assistant for the Harris Corporation in Palm Bay, FL. She served the executives in her care faithfully for 20 years prior to retiring in 2010. Mom was able to travel through the last 20 years of her life with her sister Brenda, niece Tara, and with my family. She was able to see Hawaii, Alaska, and many locations in Europe. Travel was a love for my mother, it was her passion. Throughout her life she remained a devoted wife and a fantastic mother and a well-respected professional in the workplace. The Mayhew family will mourn her loss but knows that she has gone to a place where happiness rules the day, she is pain free, and can continue to watch over all of us. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 12 at 3 P.M. at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, Palm Bay Chapel, 950 Malabar Road SE, Palm Bay, FL 32907, (321) 724-2222. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 3 P.M. prior to the service.
