Obituary of Gertrude “Trude” McDermott
Gertrude McDermott, " Trude", age 87, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2017. She was born to Lewis and Mildred Reidiger in Syracuse, N.Y. on May, 5, 1929. She graduated from North High in Syracuse and St. Joseph's College of Nursing. From a young girl , she always wanted to be a nurse. She went from candy striper, to nursing school to a registered nurse starting in Syracuse.
She met the love of her life, William McDermott, on a blind date.They married on June 9, 1951. They lived in Syracuse , Liverpool, and on to Scotia N.Y. While always working at a job she loved, she and Bill raised two children. Son Kevin and his wife Kathy, along with their son Billy, reside in Casper Wyoming. Grandson Billy is the apple of "Geebe's" eye!
Daughter Mary Anne and her husband Robert Kelley, reside in Delmar N.Y. When the kids were young, Trude enjoyed many great friendships while camping all over the Adirondacks and from Maine to Myrtle beach. Upon retirement, Trude and Bill moved to Barefoot Bay, Fla.,where they spent 28 years enjoying their good health and traveling cross country as well as China and Europe many times. Trude also kept using her nursing as a volunteer to give flu shots,as well as an overnight nurse for Indian River County in Florida . Trude and Bill participated in many clubs and organizations, and made lasting friendships within their neighborhood. Despite cognitive decline in the last few years of her life,she maintained her warmth and kindness to the end. The family wishes to extend their sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the care Trude had received from the staff and nurses of Vitas Hospice. Trude was of Catholic faith she attended St. Lukes Catholic Church.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 1:00 PM St. Luke's Catholic Church, 5055 Micco Road, Barefoot Bay. A reception will follow the mass.
