Barbara Smith Vargo posted a condolence
Monday, May 2, 2022
My mother attended Smith College, class of 1946, and will turn 98 next month. She is at a stage of life where she is reminiscing about her past, with memories throughout the decades coming to mind. She asked me to look up a student she knew in college, Alice Gilman, who was truly gifted in mathematics and a year ahead at Smith. My mom, a math major, recalled how she and another Smith friend would ask Alice for help with math concepts on occasion. Mom often remarks that Alice was one of the loveliest people she had met at Smith and was so willing to help a fellow student.
I realize that your wife/mother died in 2015, but if this memory is forwarded to your family, I want you to know how often my mom has mentioned Alice in the past few months as she has entered a new stage of aging in which she lives among memories that warm her heart with friendships from long ago and bring her comfort.
Please know that your mother's memory lives on among the Smith Family in Garden City, NY, and that her kindness touches all our hearts.
Barbara Smith Vargo, daughter of Olveria Frances (Zizis) Smith, known in college as either Zizi or Fran; she lived in Tenney House while at Smith.
