I first met John and Jan in 1965 while stationed in Aschaffenburg Germany. An associate, Winifred Platt, who later became my wife, introduced me to them. I was impressed with their generosity and easy going manner. It was a pleasure just to be around them. In 1966 I returned to Ft. Hamilton and mustered out with my new wife Winifred. Better known as Freddy or Fred, we stopped by to see them on the way home to Texas. At that time they presented us with a most beautiful blue and white crystal bowl as a wedding gift. We had two boys and we stayed in contact with John and Jan through cards and letters until 1988 when our marriage dissolved. Fred and the bowl went one way and I went another. At that point I lost contact with John and Jan. About 6 years ago, my son Isaac III moved back to Texas and brought his mother, who was in failing health, with him. She entered a small nursing home in Bertram, Texas. On her shelf near her bed was that crystal bowl. The day after Valentines Day of this year, she passed away. Isaac has that bowl and every time I saw it, I thought of John and Jan. Last month I started thinking about all of this and began to wonder if John and Jan knew that Freddy had passed. The names of John and Jan just kept popping into my mind and I finally decided that I needed to contact them and let them know. I enlisted the help of my son who directed me to this obituary and I was crushed when I read it. I had no idea that Jan had passed away in 2013 and I certainly was shocked to find that John passed last month. I cannot tell you how sorry I am for not trying to contact them earlier. Although they are gone, the memories of them will live in my heart for as long as I live. That most cherished and beautiful bowl will always have a special place on the mantel as a tribute to two wonderful people who I will never forget. It will hold beautiful memories of two of the finest people I have ever been privileged to know. My Prayers go out to the family and I just wanted you to know how a beautiful bowl, that was given in Love so many years ago, has meant so much to me and my family. God Bless You All.

Jimmy, I am sorry to read about the passing of your dad. Prayers for you and your family that the wonderful life he provided you all with and the great memories will help you through the sad times. I grew up on Banyan Way and we were school mates. I still see Lisa Bredberg (Guy), Shawn Atkinson (Harris) Kathy McLamb (Odom) and Leslie Bryan. I have helped them all with home purchases and sales here too. I am only on this obituary site because I read one in the paper thinking it was my Mel Hi English Lit teacher, Virginia Williams. I then read on and saw a few more of my friends families had loved ones pass away. My sister passed in 1985, My dad passed in 2002, and my husband in 2013. I know how much it means to read these and hope your family is blessed. Sincerely.

What a wonderful story of two wonderful people. I also went to high school with both Jan & John, and grade school with Jan. Jan and I grew up in the same neighborhood, Jan on Colchester Avenue and I was on Latham Court. I worked at Jan’s fathers Corner Cottage as a soda jerk as we were called back then, probably in 1946 or 7. We were good friends all through school and I kept in touch with Janice a couple of times a year.
So sorry for you loss, but they are back together now and probably have everything organized up there. God’s blessings on your family and will keep you in my prayers.
