Obituary of Frank Waddell Hayes

February 21, 1934- March 30, 2019 Frank Waddell Hayes passed away peacefully in Viera Florida on March 30, 2019. He was 85 years young. The second son of Wilma Jackson Hayes and Jesse Doddridge Hayes, Frank was born in Carbondale, Illinois on February 21, 1934. Raised in East Chicago, Indiana, he graduated from Washington High School and later graduated with honors from Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington, Indiana. Following the receipt of his medical degree from IU, his life of service began and for the next 53 years, he worked tirelessly to treat servicemen and their families and meet the psychiatric needs found in state and local mental health facilities and prisons. Frank achieved the rank of Colonel in the US Air Force (USAF) and served as military consultant for the Air Force Surgeon General. He held leadership positions in the US Department of Defense, UCLA, Drew Medical School and the Martin Luther King Medical Center in LA; and he was the first professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. His dedicated service in the medical community resulted in many awards and distinctions over the years, including the Legion of Merit from the USAF, the Meritorious Service Medal and several awards from local mental health organizations in California and Illinois. Frank was a scholar and a patriot with a kind heart. He was also an ordained Baptist minister who tended to the body, mind and spirit of those who sought his help. A dedicated physician and gifted communicator, he strived to understand and connect with everyone he met and throughout his life was sought out by many for his wise counsel, leadership and keen insights on issues of health and well-being. Frank was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle. He liked to travel and enjoyed piloting his own airplane. He also loved musicals, R&B, soul, jazz, and classical music and would accompany his daughters’ clarinet and flute jam sessions on his own trumpet. Known for his dry wit and great sense of humor, Frank enjoyed a zest for life that inspired all. Frank will be greatly missed by those who survive him, including his loving wife Margaret L.J. Hayes MD.; his daughters, Dana Hayes Stone (Dennis Phillip Stone) and Theresa Hayes Clark (Eric Wesley Browning); his sister Earletta Hayes Turner and brother-in-law Robert Joseph Turner; grandson Glenn William Clark Jr., niece Bonnie Jo Hayes Dykes; and nephews Jesse Doddridge Hayes IV, Frank Jackson Hayes, Robert Joseph Turner II, Rodriq Waddell Turner and Rodney Alexander Turner. Frank is preceded in death by his brother, Jesse Doddridge Hayes, Jr. and his infant son, Frank W. Hayes, Jr. A Celebration of Life service for Frank will be held on Saturday, April 13th, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Hope United Church of Christ, 2555 S. Fiske Blvd, Rockledge, FL. 32955. In addition, a Celebration of Life, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Jackson Funeral Home, located at 306 N. Wall Street, Carbondale, Illinois 62901, 618-457-6623. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale, immediately following this service where full Military Honors will be bestowed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in his name to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Frank was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
