Dear Chris, Shinika, Gillian and Alex:
I’m so very saddened to hear of Grant’s passing. He was a special man and he loved each of you dearly.
Chris, you’ve been a wonderful son and you’ve been so good to care for your father late in life.
Shinika, I know you and “Braun” knew each other and loved one another for a very long time. You, too, were so very good to take care of him in his later years. I hope as the sadness passes, only good memories remain.
My condolences to each of you, Barr, Anna and their families as well.
Warmly,
Darby

My late spouse and I had the pleasure of knowing Grant over a period of years .We were impressed with his mental and physical prowess. We were all seniors ,Grant being the most senior, but he was always the one who volunteered to walk several blocks to the parking lot to get the car while we waited. He never acted his age! He was equally adept in sharing his expertise in the intricacies of the stock market ,but even when he attempted to simplify a strategy he had found successful ,I was sometimes unable to grasp the concept. In my exchange of background information ,it became evident that we had some things in common ,being children of the Depression. I understood his independence of thought. He reminded me of my paternal grandfather .I am saddened by his passing though I had little contact with him since my husband passed. My wish for each of you who loved him as friend or family is that you cherish the good things you shared.Grant would not want you to spend too much time mourning.Mourn as you must. But do allow grief to consume you.Use your time in productive endeavor as he did.

As a son of Grant, I am very saddened by his death. However, I am glad he lived his live as he wanted. His days were spend at home supported by the wonderful care of Shinika, enjoying the view, reading about the stock market, watching sports, and sharing his contrarian viewpoint with his kids and friends. My Dad was a avid athlete and played golf until his eighties and possessed a strong intellect that he never lost. He was very proud of bringing up his kids to be smart enough and tough enough to handle the world. As well as he should be as his children and grand children are all successful in meeting the challenges of life. He was youngest of three brothers and experienced the Great Depression as a child where his father lost his job and life was difficult. He served in the Pacific in the US Air Force — stationed on a small island in the Pacific and had many stories of how he was knocked down to private three times because of his independent thinking. After the war he built his career and was successful as an Agronomist, player of the stock market, and, most importantly, a consummate golfer. All his children have many memories of Grant teaching his kids how to do “the perfect golf swing” differently each week. We all loved him and will keep memories of him alive in our hearts.
