Obituary of George E. LeVasseur
George E. LeVasseur, Commander, (Ret.) 79, flew his last flight home on November 22, 2017.
He passed away quietly at home with his loving wife of 24 ½ years by his side.
He was born on May 3, 1938, to George Joseph LeVasseur and Annette Ernestine (Boudreau) LeVasseur.
He is survived by his loving wife Colleen (Brouillette) LeVasseur, 3 sons, Jon, James (Alisha), Joseph (Amy); 2 step children Edward (Yvonne) Laflamme and Dawn Laflamme (Gatz) and 8 grandchildren, Devin, Quinn, Ellie, Harrison, Hunter, Hanna, Mya and Taylor. He has one sister, Joan (Levasseur) Hoffman and a half sister Annette Robinson.
He graduated from De Lasalle Academy, Newport, R.I. in 1956. He went on to the University of R.I. in Providence, R.I. and graduated in 1962 with a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering. On graduation day at U.R.I. he was approached by a Navy recruiter and the rest is history. He joined the Navy, moved up in rank to Commander. He served in Vietnam and flew C-118’s. He retired in 1984 with 22 years of service. George loved flying so he perused a career with various airlines.
He worked for Florida Express flying BAC-111’s and for Braniff Airlines flying DC-9’s until they filed bankruptcy. In 1990 he was hired by a cargo outfit, Airborne Express flying the DC-8. He retired from Airborne in 2000 as a Captain. He never lost his love for flying, as long as he was in the left seat.
Every now and then until his death, he would say how much he missed flying.
After retirement he and his wife (Colleen) did a lot of traveling. She introduced him to cruising and camping. They enjoyed many years in their R.V.
A Viewing will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 4-5 pm, with a service to follow at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, Melbourne.
