Obituary of Marshall Burton Gilbert
August 18, 1932 – September 20, 2018
Marshall was born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island on August 18th, 1932. He was one of eight children. His sister, Eva Ziegler is now the last remaining sibling.
He joined the Army in 1949 and spent his time in Germany during the Korean War. He served for a little over 3 years. The remainder of his working life was spent as a commercial fisherman out of the port of Galilee, Rhode Island. He had both the pleasure and the curse of owning two commercial fishing boats during his life. He fished until he was into his 70s for a total of 50 years on the ocean. He worked long, hard hours both on the sea and off.
Marshall was never one to sit around. He was always busy doing something and in his retirement years in Melbourne, Florida he could always be found working outside from early in the morning until late in the evening. He loved to kayak and did so up until his late 70s. He was definitely one of a kind and lived life on his own terms. He was a lover of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Louis Prima, and Elvis Presley. He was a very funny soul who always kept us laughing and we enjoyed many a good time with him celebrating over a beer or two…or three or four. He was a very generous person who would give you the last two dollars in his pocket. He was always willing to help friends or neighbors in need.
He is survived by his three daughters Ann Heilbron, Krista Gilbert Garrett, and Michele Gilbert Hooshmandan. He has eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He had many special friends throughout his life, far too many to name here and the family would like to thank his friend of undying devotion, Carol Corbett.
Carol took extra special care of Marshall in his last year of life and beautifully helped him crossover when his final moments came. She was our Angel and helped to keep Marshall at home where he wanted to remain. He will be deeply missed.
