I am not sure if any of the family will get to read this, but maybe it can be passed on. I met Mr. Sparks by chance walking by the old YMCA office in Lebanon. He was always welcoming of anyone, especially kids who were looking to find something constructive to do. I eventually had my dad let me join in some of the activities. I started out just hanging out playing ping pong. I was only in the 5th or 6th grade. Eventually Mr. Sparks began the sports league that included football and basketball. I played in both. I got scholarships to play both and ended up in the Lebanon High Sports Hall of Fame. But it was the summer camps that intrigued me the most. At Horn Springs, I started out as a camper, moved into a counselor, then an assistant director, and then director of camp. I learned to swim at the Y and became an junior lifeguard, and then a senior lifeguard. The trips to Center Hill Dam fishing and canoeing were awesome! He taught us how to cook bacon and eggs in a brown paper bag. He knew a lot of stuff. Taught many to water ski, I just couldn’t get it. I was the only African American on the Y staff. I would drive that old Y standard shift truck around town picking up supplies, I was only 14. I eventually became a lifeguard at Cedars of Lebanon State Park. I can’t describe the impact Mr. Sparks had on my life. I have thought about him many times over the years. It was sad to see that the Y did not thrive in Lebanon. He and the Y brought a great unity to the city that has not been matched since. I eventually went to college and seminary and now a district superintendent in the United Methodist Church. I think Mr. Sparks had a lot to do with the motivation behind what I have done, of course, with God’s power. Blessings on you sir as your influence touched this black kid in Lebanon and helped me to realize the importance of all people. Blessings and peace to the family.

Dear Jean, just learned about Homer. So many memories of your time in Lebanon. Your house. Our church group. A shower we had when Bill was on the way. Your sunny kitchen. A big dinosaur Tommy had built in his room. And your sweet little daughter who loved a long dress I had made for my daughter. I passed it along to her and you said she kept wanting to wear it long after it was too small. And then there was Homer driving the old bus to pick up my children for camp at Horn Springs. You and your family are in my best memories of that time in Lebanon when I was one of those “newcomers”, too. My love to you and your family. We wait too long to tell people we love them! Carolyn

Dear Sparks Family,
My wife and I are saddened to learn of the passing of a man who had such an positive influence in our teenage years. We lived in Lebanon, Tennessee where we were raised and I played in a local band called The Valiants. I do not know how many of those teen dances we played for but Mr. Sparks was always such an encouragement to each of us. I played drums and often visited Mr. Sparks at his home for various reasons. My wife was one of those beautiful, wonderful teenage girls who loved to attend the dances at McClain School. Mr. Sparks was one of the finest and kindest men that we both ever remember. We now live in Virginia and retired from the ministry but I still play drums and most every day a song comes on the radio that takes us back to those fond memories of Y days in Lebanon. Please know that you all are in our prayers and we look forward to the day when we believe that we will be with Mr. Homer Sparks in Heaven forever and forever.

Unbelievably, I was mowing the grass & out-of-the blue memories of 52 – 46 years ago
ran across my mental screen & the thanks for Homer Sparks driven happy memories
in my childhood in Lebanon, TN… then went inside picked up the newspaper and there
was his obit… and I had just wondered if he were still alive. Occasionally, I pass by the
Sparks house in Lebanon & think: that’s where the Homer Sparks family lives (once
upon a wonderful time). Homer provided the canvas for many Lebanon kids happy
memories in their summer months. Condolences, & hello from middle TN.

Dear Aunt Jean and family, I know how hard it is for you all now. Just know that you all are never alone. Uncle Homer is still here, I am also sure that we will all be together again some day. My father Zachy loved his baby brother very much and so did I. I am so very sorry, i will pray for each of you to find comfort. Although you never really heal, our lord will grant you time to learn how to go on.

Dear Jean and Family
I am heart broken over Homer’s Passing, I loved him more than my own brother, he will remain in my heart for the rest of my life, and I will prey for him every night and offer the Sunday Mass and Rosary for him until the day the lord calls me home. You always wanted to know why I did so many things for Homer and family, its because I took a love for Homer and his whole family, I never got to meet Bill, but if he is anything like his father he’s included. My condolence to you Jean and your wonderful family, you will be in my heart forever.
My love to all Jim
