I am a US Army Veteran. I read this obituary with extreme interest.
I will be part of an honor guard for this fine mans Military funeral on March 3rd. My role and honor will be to sound TAPS following a 3 round rifle volley salute.

I had the pleasure of learning so much about Mr. Smolen and his family through my coworker and friend, Marguerite. To his grieving family and friends, rest your hearts and minds in peace, knowing the love you shared with him will forever shine.

I’m so very glad I got to meet Frank a number of times in person in the past 26 years! He was such a gentleman, and so kind, always in a great and lively mood when he shared time with my friend Marguerite, enjoying many activities during her magazine days! I am so sorry he was too far away in Florida for me to visit in recent years, especially as his health was in decline in these elder years. But what a hero he was in WWII, and what a hero to his own family, one of the good guys of “the greatest generation”. I am very sorry the Smolen family has had to endure losing him – but I know he is flying among the angels right now! No matter how old one is upon dying, nor how many years his children have him, we each get one and only one dad, and when he goes, there is just no replacing him. I pray that the void in your hearts will heal, and will soon be filled with all the many great memories you cherished of having Frank in your lives! I hope to be there as you “box him for the angels” on Saturday, March 3rd….God bless you all! Sincerely, Marybeth C. Phillips
