If you are reading this, I’m Colleen, Frank’s youngest child. I don’t know what made me look at this site today, other than a moment of grief that are beginning to rise to the surface.
I’m so grateful to see that many of you, whose names I know and stories were shared by my Dad, finally received word.
It was my Dads first directive on his list for me to get the news to the “parakeet “.
With the help of my cousin and her husband, Jeanne and Bob Rupp, they full filled that wish.
I apologize to those who communicated by email faithfully with my Dad, that I could not tell you sooner, as there were problems accessing my Dads contacts. I will put my email in the content, please feel free to contact me and share with others.
I had the blessing and honor to walk with my Dad, the last five months of his life to the gates.
Father Raybourn, I feel as if I know you, as I said my Dad told me stories about so many of you over the years, I will be grateful to talk about those months and his passing, as I have been swept up in the business of the remains of his life, becoming more complicated than my Dad ever intended due to an unforeseen obstacles, my Dad intuitively warned me of.
We were very close and as you can imagine, he is my hero. I welcome the opportunity to talk about him and hear your experiences.
Please know my Dad died the way he lived. He made his bed the day he passed.
My Dad was a man of unwavering faith. He walked the walk. During the months he asked me to come and stay. We prayed every night and talked intimately about his faith and life.
He was a Warrior, a Patriot, Protector, Wise Sage, Loyal, generous friend to many.
He was a realist, told it like it was, incredibly intelligent and intuitive. As friends you all know this. As his daughter, I was blessed.
He lived life until the day his heart stopped on his terms.
I am living by the words my Dad said to me so many times, “keep the faith”. As my Dad said to me so many times.
Thank you to all who wrote. It has given me comfort. Gratefully, Colleen

Frank was 2 years behind my sister at BHS (class of 1950) and 2 years ahead of me at BHS. I last saw Frank and his wife at a BHS reunion in San Antonio (2001) a few days following “(“9-11”) and we had dinner together at the Menger Hotel (host site of the reunion next-door to the Alamo). Frank was a good man and we communicated by e-mail often. I think God for his life and soul!!

To Frank’s family: I have just now heard about your father, grandfather’s death on the 10th of November. It has saddened me greatly. Although I was from the class of 1952, we were fine friends. He always was a class guy and that is the way he lived. When we went to the mini-reunions we enjoy spending time with each other and chatting. Please accept this as my belated heartfelt condolences. As is my custom, I shall remember him in my daily prayers and at any Mass I can offer for a period of 30 days. “May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.” May God grant you much strength and serenity.
I had been wondering about him, as I hadn’t heard from him. If one of you would kindly tell me how he died, I would certainly appreciate it. God bless you all. (11 March 2018)

Frank was a very good friend during our Balboa High School years with whom I shared our enthusiasm for ROTC and all things military. After graduation, I lost track of Frank but we got together again during our BHS Class Reunions in San Antonio during the late 1990s and early 2000s and renewed our friendship. He was an icon at BHS and liked by all. My deepest sympathy to the family. I share your sorrow.

Frank was ROTC Commander at Balboa High School. I was class of 1952 and I think he was class of 1951. Always a kind person and a serious student. It was clear he wanted a military career way back then. Well, he certainly carved out a very distinguished one. I am not the least bit surprised — he was a doer.
May he Rest in Peace. Gus A. Mellander

I was stationed with Captain Frank Mayo in Straubing Germany in 1960 as his clerk in Regimental S4, of the 11th Armored Cav. He was one of the few officers that understood the minds and status of enlisted personnel. As he told me, he started out as one until he was accepted into OCS. He was great man and a true patriot and I wish I could have told him that. My best wishes to the family and I don’t have to tell you to be proud because I know you are.
