Obituary of Nolan Sherwood Singletary

Nolan was born in a log cabin in Day, Florida on February 3, 1936. He was in the first graduating class of Boone High School, Orlando, FL. As a young man, he was employed by the United States Postal Service where he worked 35+ years in supervisory and management positions before retiring as the Postmaster of the Cocoa Beach Post Office. During that time, he served in the United States Army Reserves for 13 years. Nolan was a world-class storyteller and never knew a stranger. He told of a time when he was a toddler and his father held him out of a window in the cabin to see snow. Also of a time he fell into the Suwannee River where his father noticed him floating on down the river and reached in and pulled him out saving his life. He was a giving and humble man who was a builder of children’s backyard forts, rocking horses and playhouses. He could fix anything with a tube of shoe goop and a roll of duct tape. When relaxing, he loved to play his guitar or his harmonicas. He loved to read and instilled that passion in his children. Nolan had a quiet sense of humor that stayed with him even while battling his illness. Nolan was a member of the Satellite Beach United Methodist Church where he served as a Stephen Minister and where he was surrounded by those he called his “church family”. He was the loving husband of Ruth (White) Singletary, father of Kathryn Boyle and David Singletary, stepdad to Scott, Michael and David O’Brien, and grandfather of 5, step-grandfather of 4 and great-grandfather of 3. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. His Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Satellite Beach United Methodist Church located at 450 Lee Avenue in Satellite Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Nolan to the Satellite Beach United Methodist Church or Hospice of St. Francis.
