I knew Dorris Saunders through her volunteer work at The Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio. She was a talented docent with ITC’s outreach program, in which hands-on teaching objects focusing on a central Texas cultural history concept were taken out to schools. Dorris was a natural with this somewhat demanding, but rewarding, volunteer job. With her classic features and heart-shaped face, Dorris was also lovely to look at, but also a beautiful person within to know. I enjoyed working with her very much and her work with ITC was deeply appreciated. Until reading this obituary in the San Antonio Express News, I had no idea of her vast accomplishments, but the long list is not a surprise. Dorris was the epitome of natural grace, unforced creativity, and great elegance. I shall always remember her with great fondness.

Dorris was my role model – so classy and elegant. She was beautiful on the inside and out. She sang in my choir and was a reader in my cantatas, with her clear and lovely voice. She lived and breathed her faith. She was a confidante and adviser – if you’re decorating a room , find a painting you love and take your color choices from it. The world will not be as special without her shining smile and easy radiance.

While serving as Doris’ pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran in the 80’s, Doris redecorated my office. My heart sank when the first strokes of grey paint went on the ceiling. Of course, when the office was finished, my impression completely changed. To this day it was the loveliest office I’ve ever inhabited. Even more than her considerable talent, Doris was one of the most beautiful people I’ve known, a beauty that radiated from deep within and from an invigorating and abiding faith. Peace to her memory.

Dorris and I sang together at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in San Antonio. She was such a beautiful, loving soul. She refurbished our Narthex. It stayed that way until we closed our doors last February. Very talented lady in so many ways. Peace to her and her family, love Evelyn Lewis

I had the pleasure of spending a year with Dorris. She and I became good friends. It was a pleasure to spend time with her and I’m very glad we met. She’ll always be in my thoughts and she will be missed.
