Obituary of Irene “Rene” Slorach
Rene passed from this life to the next on July 12, 2018 in the presence of her daughters and surrounded by the love of her extended family and friends.
She was born on April 1, 1924 in the small town of Kells, Northern Ireland to Robert John Mackey and Thomsena Isabell Crooks. The eldest daughter of four siblings Robert, Thomas, Muriel and Margot, she was always the “big” sister. She married the love of her life AJ “Sandy” Slorach in 1948 at Cregagh Presbyterian Church, Belfast NI.
With their daughters, Deborah and Linda, Rene and AJ escaped the cold, wet weather of Northern Ireland for a five year adventure in sunny Jamaica. In 1974 they immigrated to the US where AJ’s work with Contel/Verizon Telephone Company took them from London KY to Knoxville TN, then to Atlanta GA and finally to retirement in 1989 in Cocoa, Florida; a love of travel took them to many countries around the world; and a love of music and square dancing (followed by line dancing for Rene) introduced them to many cherished and lifelong friends.
Rene was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by her children Deborah Lugar (Greg) and Linda Walker; grandchildren Samantha Lugar, Gabrielle Harmon, Olivia Lugar, and Bethany Walker; great grandchildren Easton Harmon, Lane Robinson, Asher Harmon, and Loreleigh Robinson; and beloved sister Margot Maynard (Zimbabwe).
