Obituary of Virginia M. Metcalf

Virginia M. Metcalf, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2019, at age 93. Virginia was born on June 21, 1926 in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was the first child of Milton F. Geltz and Virginia E. (Hardwick). Her family returned to South Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1940, where Virginia would spend the next 72 years. She attended High School at the H. T. Wing School graduating in 1944 from a class of 11 students. Virginia then attended Bryant and Stratton School in Boston, MA, finishing first in her class with an Associate’s Degree in secretarial skills. She married her one true love Erwin L. Metcalf of Fort Collins, CO, on June 12, 1945. Together they raised 2 sons Robert and Ronald, and two daughters, Marilyn and Gail. Following the death of her daughter Gail in 2012, Virginia moved to Melbourne Florida, where she lived out her remaining years in comfort. Virginia loved cooking, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She was awarded several blue ribbons at the Barnstable County Fair for her infant sweater set designs. Her needlework was widely admired by many.  She was an avid reader. Debbie Macomber was her favorite author reading over 50 of her novels. In her later years, she enjoyed passing her time watching The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal.  She was a kind, gentle, loving person and always young at heart. Family always came first; she never forgot a Birthday or Anniversary. She is survived by her son Robert of Wareham MA, daughter Marilyn of Palm Bay FL, six grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Erwin Metcalf, son Ronald and daughter Gail,  brother Milton Geltz and his wife Florence, all long time Sandwich Ma residents. A memorial service mass will be held on Monday, 11:00 am, October 28, 2019 at the Corpus Christi Church on Meeting House Rd., Sandwich, MA, followed by a gathering of friends and family at the American Legion Hall to share memories and celebrate her life. A private burial will be attended by family members.  The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N.
