Much delayed, but I just found out about Derek today. I’m a Melbourne neighbor that often saw both your children playing, running, smiling, and walking a very big dog – always full of life and so friendly. Last time I saw Derek he was fishing at the lake behind my house. It wasn’t a successful evening but he was still enjoying the effort. I was our of the country during this time and I’m devastated to hear of your loss. So very sorry for your family.

The love and joy that Derek brought to all will never be forgotten. We are truly heartbroken. We not only loved Derek’s smile but we were so impressed by his amazing athletic abilities. Cliff loved running into Derek at the races and would joke at how he use to be able to beat Derek but as Derek matured he outraced Cliff by quite a bit. Derek would always tell Lyndsi at school how he saw us at the races. He was so respectful and sweet. His smile … something that will forever be embedded in our minds and in our hearts. We feel so blessed that we knew Derek and were able to be a part of his life and have many wonderful memories with him and your whole family throughout our years at Ascension Catholic School. Derek was a fantastic young man. Heaven truly gained an angel.

Dear Cheryl, Ken & Aubrey: Our family is so saddened to have heard this news. Derek was such a special young man, and he always left an amazing impression on anyone he came in contact with. He was so gentle, kind, caring, and he put his heart into everything he did, to do his very personal best. His smile was contagious like no smile we had ever seen.
