James Altzner, 84, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2015 following a long illness.
Jim was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 10, 1931 to Peg and Fred Altzner. After attending John Marshall High School, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served with the Seabee Battalion during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1955. On October 20, 1951 he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ross. Jim was stationed in many parts of the world while serving his country, including Morocco; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and St. John, Newfoundland. After receiving an Honorable Discharge he returned to Cleveland and began his apprenticeship as a carpenter. Jim expanded his passion and knowledge to many areas of the construction industry. His career included being a custom homebuilder; commercial builder; general superintendent; and Director of Skilled Trades for the City of Cleveland. Before retiring in 1992, Jim was the General Superintendent for the Marriott Corporation, responsible for building dozens of Residence Inns and Marriott Courtyards in the Southeast. He is remembered for his humor, strong will, and the pride he took in his accomplishments in life, which included his family. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Pat Altzner; sons Jim (Marcelle) and Jeff (Rocio); grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa, Kate, Lauren, Angela and Patrick; and great-grandchildren Grayson James Ramsey and Lila Ramsey. His brother, Bill Altzner, of Palm City, Florida, also survives him.
