Obituary of Doris Flagg
Doris Flagg
(1924-2019)
Doris Mae Flagg, 94, of Satellite Beach, Florida, passed away on October 2, 2018, after complications from an infection, at Holmes/HealthFirst Regional Hospital in Melbourne, Florida.
Born Doris Mae Thurnher (later changed to Turner) in Chelsea Massachusetts on February 25, 1924 to Gustave Thurnher and Lillian McGonagle, both of whom she dearly loved.
She is survived by her daughter; Judith Ranson and husband Randy of Indialantic, Florida, her son; Gregory Flagg of Orlando, Florida and two granddaughters; Hayley Ranson of North Bay Village, Florida and Rachel Ranson of Salisbury, North Carolina.
She is predeceased by her older brother; Joseph Turner and younger sister Lillian Celani.
She grew up, during the Great Depression, around the Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island areas of New England. After graduating for high school she went on to attend Pembroke College and later Brown University. After marrying in 1946, she gave up completing her higher education to raise her family. She had two children, Judith born 1953 and Gregory born 1955. Trained as a stenographer she was proficient in typing, shorthand and later medical stenography/transcription, which she utilized in her Civil Service career spanning most of her early life.
A strongly independent woman, and a supporter of women’s rights, she enlisted in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve(shortly after the start of WWII), marched in Tallahassee for the Equal Rights Amendment(ERA) and was still driving and taking care of herself at age 94. We will remember her for her sense of humor, Irish constitution(on her mother’s side), her elegant handwriting and meticulous record keeping.
She loved reading (especially the Wall Street Journal with her morning’s coffee), genealogy, dancing and gardening. Like many mothers her greatest concern in life were the happiness of her children and grandchildren.
Rest in peace forever, Mom/Nana/Doris.
The family of Doris Flagg would like to convey our gratitude to Holmes/Health First Regional Hospital for providing the exceptional care she received in her final days. We would like to thank the entire Medical ICU staff, the D7 nursing staff (especially Adrienne and Asim), and her personal physican, Dr. Jaime Tavarez for all they did for her.
