Obituary of Jayne Allhusen Fuhrman

Jayne Allhusen Fuhrman passed away on February 7, 2014, following a brief but intense battle with cancer. Ms. Fuhrman, age 62, was originally from Wantagh, NY. She has lived in the Melbourne area for the past 20 years. She is predeceased by her husband Alfred Fuhrman, her twin brother Jerry Allhusen, and her parents John Allhusen and Harriet Morgan. Ms. Fuhrman was the current president of the residents’ council at Emeritus. For many years, Jayne was a committed board member and volunteer at the Brevard Association for the Advancement of the Blind, where she taught daily living skills to adults who had or were losing their sight. She has also served as president of a local blind leisure group, organizing activities for blind residents in the vicinity. Although Ms. Fuhrman was blind from birth and suffered other physical handicaps, she overcame them courageously. She attended public schools on Long Island, participating in choir and other school music programs. Like her sighted classmates, she took ballet classes and learned to play piano and guitar. Because of her remarkable successes as a young person, she was frequently the subject of articles in local newspapers. Upon graduation from MacArthur High School, Jayne went on to obtain a bachelors degree from Adelphi University. As an adult, Jayne worked as a medical transcriptionist in Stony Brook, NY until she and her husband moved to Louisiana. Following his death, Jayne moved to Indian Harbour Beach and lived independently for many years. She proudly volunteered her time for blind causes and participated enthusiastically in the Praise choir, bible study, and other activities at Satellite Beach United Methodist Church. Jayne’s photographic memory and perfect pitch made her a tough competitor in trivia competitions as well as a wonderful duet partner. Her quick wit and jokes made everyone laugh, and her knowledge of the bible was most impressive. Even through the last days of her struggle with breast cancer, she inspired many people through her example and her faith. Ms. Fuhrman is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Susan Allhusen of Hilton Head Island, SC, as well as nine nieces and nephews and their families. Her life serves as an example to them of what is possible in life, regardless of one’s challenges. Jayne touched many lives and she will be sorely missed by them all. Sweet peace, Jayne! A memorial service to celebrate Jayne’s life will be held at Emeritus of Melbourne, the community she loved and which supported her so lovingly. At 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 13 at Emeritus, 1765 Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne.The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Brevard Association for the Advancement of the Blind, 674 S.
