Anthony Mattesi, 101, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2019, peacefully at William Childs Hospice House, Palm Bay, FL.
He was born on November 25, 1918, in Bronx, New York to Antonio and Vincenza Mattesi, both of whom preceded him in death.
A loving Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, Beloved Uncle, Great Uncle and Friend. His family includes his son Anthony Mattesi and his wife Ellen of Kingston, NY, his daughter Helen Baudouin of Melbourne, FL, and son Michael and his wife Betty of Melbourne, FL. His Grandchildren are: Donna Davidson and her husband Billy, Dr. Mark A.Mattesi Phd., Elizabeth Baudouin and her wife Natalie Shirinian and Jarrett Mattesi. His Great-grandchildren are: Ava and Logan Davidson.
Anthony “Tally” “Poppy” was born in the Bronx, NY of Italian immigrants of Castelvetere Sul Calore, Italy. He was always extremely proud of his New York and Italian heritage and life.
He married Carmela Guerra, (deceased) on May 9, 1943, in New York City. In 1983, before it was a trend, Tally traced his roots and found his extended family in this medieval commune in the province of Avellino, Campania. He continued his quest to find his remaining family in Chatham, Canada. In which he became very close and remained in contact for 36 years to the present time.
Anthony served in the United States Air Corps from September 1942 to January 1946. He was an Honorably discharged Staff Sergeant who during World War II received medals in Good Conduct, Pacific Citation and as a Sharp Shooter.
He spent 30 years with Joseph Leuner Jr. Inc, Transportation in Elmsford, NY, as a tractor-trailer driver and prides himself in never getting a scratch on any vehicle. He was a member of Union Truckers 807.
“Tally” was known for his incredible singing voice and as an entertainer. He loved the old standards from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s especially Frank Sinatra. He sang well pass his 100th birthday, entertaining family, friends and residents at his regular gig at Grand Villa of Melbourne Assisted Living, his home for 9 years and Grand Villa Memory Care. He had many fans both in person and on Facebook and put on an amazing show every time. He loved making people happy through the songs of his era. Tally wanted everyone to know that he loved his family very much and considers it his biggest accomplishment. And by family not only his immediate family but all his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, as well as his Grand Villa family.
Calling hours are Thursday, January 2, 2020, 3:00 PM-7:00 PM at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, 1001 Hickory Street, Melbourne, FL 32901. Military Honors for Veterans Burial Service is scheduled for Friday, January 3, 2020, at 1:00 PM. at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 North US Highway #1, Mims, Florida 32754.
